Embedded Software Engineer
About Shift5
Shift5 is building the data platform for onboard operational technology (OT). We deliver cybersecurity, predictive maintenance, and compliance capabilities that enable defense and commercial fleets to operate with greater readiness, resilience, and mission assurance.
We are seeking a mission-aligned Embedded Software Engineer to drive the design and implementation of real-time, high-performance embedded systems deployed on custom Linux-based hardware.
This role sits at the intersection of Low-Level Software Development, Hardware Integration, and Systems Engineering and will play a critical role in supporting Shift5’s next phase of growth.
This is not a high-level application role. It requires technical fluency in systems programming, ownership of the hardware/software interface, and a Mission First Mindset to secure the critical systems that keep our economy and defense moving.
What You’ll Do
-
Lead and execute the development, optimization, and maintenance of real-time embedded software for custom Linux-based hardware platforms.
-
Own the design and implementation of low-level hardware interface layers, including memory-mapped register access and DMA transfers.
-
Partner closely with hardware, FPGA, and data analytics teams to define requirements and deliver end-to-end solutions.
-
Drive measurable impact in software performance by profiling and tuning systems for low-latency, high-throughput data acquisition.
-
Identify and act on opportunities to improve robust integration through the creation of Linux kernel drivers and userspace APIs.
-
Navigate complex hardware-software interactions, including board-level debugging with oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
-
Contribute directly to the bring-up and troubleshooting of new hardware platforms to ensure resilient software releases.
What We’re Looking For
-
Experience in embedded systems and low-level software development (3+ years).
-
Demonstrated ability to build custom embedded Linux distributions using tools like Yocto or Buildroot.
-
Strong technical skills in systems programming languages (C, C++, or Rust) and scripting (Python, Bash).
-
Comfort operating in fast-paced, mission-critical environments where hardware and software layers intersect.
-
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
-
Preferred qualifications include experience with Linux kernel driver development, VHDL/FPGA design, or serial protocols (CAN, MIL-STD-1553, ARINC-429).
Compensation & Benefits
-
Base Salary: $120,000 – $180,000
-
Bonus program and equity in a fast-growing startup
-
Employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage
-
Health Savings Account with annual employer contributions
-
Life and Disability Insurance
-
Uncapped paid time off policy
-
Flexible work & remote work policy
-
