Manufacturing Engineer
About Us
We are Sila, a next-generation battery materials company. Our mission is to power the world’s transition to clean energy. To create this future, our team is building a better lithium-ion battery from the inside out today. We engineer and manufacture ground-breaking battery materials that significantly increase the energy density of batteries, while reducing their size and weight. The result? Smaller more powerful batteries that can unlock innovation in consumer devices and accelerate the mass adoption of electric cars to eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels. We're tackling one of the biggest challenges of our time every day, and together we're redefining what's possible. Are you ready to be a part of a team committed to changing the world?
Who You Are
As the Manufacturing Engineer you will be Sila's resident technical representative supporting battery cell manufacturing across one or more contract manufacturing sites in Taiwan. You will work closely with manufacturing operations, battery engineering, supplier quality, and global supply chain to identify production issues, perform first-level technical assessments, verify corrective actions, and drive manufacturing readiness throughout product development and mass production.
Responsibilities and Duties
On-Site Operations & Production Readiness
- Serve a Sila's primary battery manufacturing technical liaison in Taiwan, providing direct technical and operational leadership between supplier operations and Sila’s Engineering, Quality, and Supply Chain teams.
- Drive manufacturing readiness across all build phases (EVT, DVT, PVT), ramp-up, and mass production.
- Monitor key operational metrics, including throughput, yield, equipment utilization, and project schedules.
Technical Troubleshooting & Quality Assurance
- Lead on-site technical troubleshooting and quality investigations for process deviations, line abnormalities, and Critical-to-Quality (CTQ) issues.
- Evaluate root causes, verify corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), and escalate issues requiring engineering or executive approval.
- Analyze process data, SPC trends, and process validation metrics to implement continuous improvement and operational excellence initiatives.
Governance & Supplier Management
- Coordinate cross-functional execution by managing engineering documentation, resolving drawing/specification ambiguities, and tracking action items.
- Standardize manufacturing practices, reporting metrics, and engineering procedures across multiple supplier sites.
- Support supplier qualification and long-term manufacturing scalability while managing operational risks.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
- Education & Experience: B.S. in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Materials, Electrical, or Manufacturing) with 5+ years of direct experience in lithium-ion battery manufacturing.
- Supplier Collaboration: Proven track record working directly with contract manufacturers or external supply chain partners.
- Quality & Problem Solving: Solid proficiency in battery manufacturing quality systems, process validation, statistical problem-solving (SPC/DOE), and root cause analysis.
- Documentation & Data: Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, process documentation, and work instructions.
- Cross-Functional Influence: Strong technical judgment and communication skills, with a proven ability to influence external suppliers and balance production urgency with disciplined engineering decisions.
- Language Proficiency: Native or fluent Mandarin (spoken, reading, and writing) and professional proficiency in English (spoken and written).
Preferred Qualifications
- Form Factor Experience: Specific experience leading battery manufacturing scale-up for pouch or cylindrical cells.
- Systems Expertise: Hands-on experience navigating MES, ERP, and manufacturing data platforms.
- Global Collaboration: Prior experience collaborating across cross-time-zone teams (specifically bridging US and Asian operational hours).
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Location: Full-time on-site in Taiwan (frequent presence on factory floors).
