Job Description

Position: Senior Substation Engineer

 

Location: Remote

 

Overview:

The Senior Substation Engineer is responsible for the performance, reliability, and lifecycle management of medium- and high-voltage electrical systems across the operating fleet, including substations, power transformers, protection and control systems, switchgear, and related MV/HV equipment.

This role serves as the technical owner of substation and MV/HV system performance—bridging field execution, engineering analysis, utility coordination, and vendor engagement. The position informs equipment selection and design standards for new projects while driving resolution of both systemic and site-specific issues.

 

Main Responsibilities: 

  • Own the performance, reliability, and technical stewardship of substation and MV/HV systems across the operating fleet. 
  • Lead resolution of major equipment failures, recurring issues, and complex technical challenges through structured root cause analysis and corrective actions. 
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting support for transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protection and control systems, and related equipment. 
  • Serve as the primary engineering liaison with utilities, OEMs, contractors, and technical service providers. 
  • Oversee fleet protection and control systems, including settings, logic, coordination, event analysis, and configuration management. 
  • Develop lifecycle strategies for major substation assets, including condition assessment, maintenance optimization, spare parts planning, and replacement strategies. 
  • Partner with Delivery and Engineering teams to influence equipment selection, design standards, protection philosophies, and commissioning practices. 
  • Collaborate across Asset Management, O&M, Compliance, Performance Engineering, and ROC teams to improve reliability, safety, and operational performance. 

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering strongly preferred) 
  • 7+ years of experience with substations, MV/HV systems, power system operations, or related electrical infrastructure 
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting, commissioning, testing, or maintaining substation equipment 
  • Experience with protection and control systems, relay analysis, coordination, or related functions 
  • Strong understanding of power transformers, breakers, switchgear, and MV/HV equipment 
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues 
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Utility-scale solar, power generation, renewable energy, industrial power, or utility experience 
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required 
  • Experience with NERC Reliability Standards and utility interconnection requirements 
  • Experience supporting renewable generation interconnections 
  • Experience with reliability engineering, failure mode analysis, and condition-based maintenance programs 
  • Experience working with equipment OEMs, utilities, contractors, and cross-functional teams
