Senior Accounting Manager - Real Estate

Playa Vista, CA

The Real Estate Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the financial health and reporting accuracy of a diverse property portfolio. This role bridges the gap between technical accounting and property management, ensuring that all financial data—from monthly reconciliations to annual CAM audits—is precise, timely, and compliant with GAAP or IFRS standards.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented leader who can navigate the complexities of real estate cycles, tax implications, and investor reporting while mentoring a team of staff accountants.

Core Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting & Analysis:
    • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for individual properties and consolidated portfolios.
    • Perform variance analysis (Actual vs. Budget) and provide actionable insights to senior management.
    • Manage the month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Property & Portfolio Operations:
    • Supervise the calculation and billing of Common Area Maintenance (CAM), real estate taxes, and insurance reconciliations.
    • Review lease abstractions to ensure accurate rent roll integration and revenue recognition.
    • Monitor cash flow requirements, distribution schedules, and debt service compliance.
  • Audit & Tax Compliance:
    • Coordinate with external auditors for year-end reviews and tax preparation.
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax requirements specific to real estate (e.g., 1031 exchanges, depreciation schedules).
  • Leadership & Process Improvement:
    • Manage and mentor a team of Staff/Senior Accountants.
    • Identify and implement process improvements to streamline accounting workflows and enhance data integrity within ERP systems.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Experience: 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2–3 years specifically in Commercial or Residential Real Estate.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in real estate accounting software (e.g., Yardi, MRI, AppFolio, or Timberline).
    • Advanced Excel skills (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUPs, and complex modeling).
  • Certification: CPA designation is highly preferred.

Compensation

Salary: $100,000 – $130,000 (commensurate with experience).
