Product Design Lead
We're hiring a Design Lead to build and lead design execution across the systems and shared experiences that form the foundation of SmarterDx's Clinical AI applications. You'll manage a small team of designers while remaining hands-on — ensuring consistency, quality, and scalability across all of SmarterDx. From authentication and user settings to metrics dashboards, customer success touchpoints, and internal tooling, you'll own the surfaces and systems that every clinician, customer, and engineer interacts with.
This is a high-ownership role at the intersection of people leadership and craft. You'll guide your team's day-to-day execution, raise the quality bar across the design system, and partner closely with PMs and Engineering leads on delivery and planning. You'll also flex into product features directly, ensuring your impact is felt at both the platform and end-user level.

What You’ll Do
- Report to the VP Product
- Lead design critique and review processes to uphold high quality and consistency across all team deliverables.
- Lead and develop a team of 4-6 designers while remaining hands-on (~30–50%), guiding both system-level work and product feature design.
- Collaborate with Product Management, Data, and Engineering leads on planning, prioritization, and delivery, representing the design team's capacity and perspective.
- Champion an inclusive, feedback-driven team culture that fosters learning and continuous improvement.
- Set a strong example for communication, cross-functional collaboration, and operational excellence.
- Partner with designers to establish and embed strong Design team values, culture, vision, and guiding principles.
- Partner closely with engineering to ensure high-quality implementation and design fidelity
- Drive work from concept through shipped product in fast-moving, iterative environments
- Define and uphold rigorous design quality standards for all team outputs, ensuring a consistent bar for craft, usability, and accessibility.
- Own the team's end-to-end design process, from discovery through delivery, continuously iterating on rituals, tools, and ways of working for optimal alignment and effectiveness.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for complex design challenges, ambiguous problem spaces, and cross-functional tensions requiring senior-level judgment.
- Articulate the design team's work and priorities to external stakeholders, translating design decisions into clear business and user impact.
- Drive cross-functional alignment on User Experience (UX) direction, ensuring Product Management and Engineering partners share a clear understanding of design intent.
- Proactively identify gaps in team coverage or capabilities and surface resourcing, tooling, or process needs to design leadership to mitigate potential blockers.
What You Bring
- Experience managing or formally mentoring designers, with a track record of developing design talent.
- Ability to balance hands-on craft with people management — knowing when to do and when to delegate.
- Strong facilitation and feedback skills; comfortable leading critique and aligning teams around design decisions.
- 6+ years of product design experience, including at least 1–2 years in a lead, staff, or management capacity with responsibility for other designers' work.
- 2+ years experience in healthcare or healthtech
- A portfolio that demonstrates system-level thinking as well as exceptional visual, interaction, and information-architecture work.
- Experience designing intuitive experiences for expert users navigating large volumes of structured and unstructured data (dashboards, review workflows, decision-support tools).
- Proven track record of building and maintaining design systems in production environments, including component design, theming, and governance.
- Design experiences that surface AI-driven insights and support clinical decision-making within complex healthcare workflows
- Comfort writing clear documentation and guidelines that scale adoption across multiple teams.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with demonstrated ability to represent the design team across engineering, product, and leadership stakeholders.
Nice to Have
- Experience with AI/ML or decision-support systems
- Experience in RCM, EHR, billing, charting, or transcription tools strongly preferred
Compensation
- $190K-$210K base + benefits
