Business Development Representative

Who we are

SmartPass is a fast-growing K-12 startup developing a platform to make schools more efficient. Initially, we launched with a digital hall pass system — not just bathroom and water fountain visits but managing all kinds of student movements such as counselor appointments, nurse visits, and office hours. Our solution has successfully aided over 3,000 K–12 schools in maximizing classroom time, minimizing aimless hallway wandering, and enhancing student accountability.

In the past year, we've grown our product suite to include three more offerings: Flex for adaptable scheduling, ID cards for secure student identification, and Attendance for roll-call. Each product is at a pivotal stage, and we're on a mission to make SmartPass the most delightful, easy-to-use operations tool schools have ever seen. K-12 software is typically bad, and we’re in the process of changing that.

Role Overview

Are you passionate about building relationships and driving meaningful conversations with future customers? Are you excited about the potential of technology to drive meaningful engagement during the sales process? As a Business Development Representative (BDR) at SmartPass, you’ll be at the forefront of our growth efforts, utilizing creative and proven outreach methods to engage with and help schools + districts learn about our solutions. You’ll be responsible for identifying and qualifying new opportunities, building strong initial relationships and lasting impressions, and working closely with the Account Management team to build our pipeline.

If you're excited about impacting the K–12 industry and you thrive in a collaborative and creative environment, this role is for you. We are committed to providing you with the tools, mentorship, and support needed to grow in your career. We are hiring 2 BDRs - one will be focused on our West Coast Territories and one will be focused on our East Coast Territories.

How You’ll Contribute Right Away

We’ll set you up to quickly become the go-to resource for generating new leads and starting valuable conversations with key decision-makers at schools and districts. From day one, you'll work closely with the Account Management team to understand customer needs and position SmartPass as the solution they’re looking for. We believe in giving you the autonomy to master your role while offering support and mentorship every step of the way.

What You’ll Do

  • Own Your Territory: Take full responsibility for generating leads and building a healthy sales pipeline through outreach—calls, emails, and social media. We’re looking for BDRs who find creative approaches to traditional challenges and understand how to drive brand love and engagement through innovative outreach methods.
  • Build Relationships: Connect with schools and district leaders, learn about their needs, and communicate how SmartPass can make a difference.
  • Demo SmartPass: Conduct product demos that give prospects a clear understanding of how SmartPass can solve their challenges, setting the stage for in-depth conversations with Account Managers.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Work seamlessly with Account Managers and Marketing to ensure smooth handoffs, aligning on outreach and engagement strategies.
  • Track Your Progress: Maintain detailed records of all outreach activities in our CRM (HubSpot) and use data and metrics to track and drive your success.

What You’ve Done

  • 1–2 years of experience in a sales or BDR role

    • Because we expect our employees to be able to contribute right away, we do believe the ideal applicant is currently working in a sales or BDR role.

  • Proven experience prospecting and effectively communicating with both cold and warm leads
    • Confidence in cold outreach is essential—this should be a skill you’re actively using and refining in your current role.
  • Strong proficiency with CRM tools (HubSpot preferred) and tech-savviness in using sales, workflow, and collaboration tools to streamline processes and enhance communication

    • Bonus: Share some of your favorite tools and how you’ve used them to hack your workflows!

  • Experience and interest in being on the cutting edge of sales and collaboration technology

    • How are you using AI and other new tools to get creative?

  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt to new challenges

  • Prior experience—or a strong interest—in the K–12 market is a plus

The estimated salary range for this role is $55,000–$65,000 per year. Actual compensation packages are based on factors unique to each candidate, such as skill set, years of experience, and role-specific factors. In addition to competitive pay, we offer benefits, equity, and perks that support your growth and reflect our mission-driven company culture. We believe in transparency and fairness and are happy to discuss compensation details during your initial conversations.

SmartPass is committed to creating a company where all employees regardless of background can show up and feel they belong. This is an ongoing journey, and we welcome questions one here we’re at during your interview process. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, veteran status, or fitness level.

Why you might be excited about us

  1. We’re building software that reduces admin and teacher burden, making schools a better learning environment. If you’re into education and love working on tough engineering problems, you’ll love helping build our product.
  2. Good design is one of our core values and differentiators. We won’t ship something that isn’t easy to use and doesn't looks good, even though we’re still a small startup.
  3. A handful of us are hybrid in the NYC area, if you are too you can join us and collaborate with the founders face to face and some of the EPD team members.
  4. We’re small, so you’ll have big responsibilities and lay the groundwork as we start scaling.
  5. Our team has a wide range of experiences (folks from Microsoft, Salesforce, Nielsen, previous startups, and K-12 administrators/teachers).
  6. Our culture is simple: we work hard, we’re lifelong learners, and we’re fun — at every monthly all-hands, we start with a “memes of the month” and then dive deep into the work someone is doing.
  7. Get in at the ground-level of a fast-growing startup.
  8. We'll mold your role to shape a career you're excited about. We care a ton about your satisfaction and job happiness, and will help prep you for whatever you're looking for in the future.

Why you might not be excited about us

  1. We’re small (~50 people in the company right now), so if you like more established companies, it’s not (yet) the right time. You’ll help build our company’s culture.
  2. Since we’re an early stage startup, projects and priorities may shift. We’ll expect you to bring your own experience and give input to shift these priorities, too.
  3. Our customers love us, and there's a lot we can improve. It's a great place to be, but that means there's some jank. (Nothing too scary! 😃)

Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

Form CC-305

OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
