At Smartsheet, we are revolutionizing the way teams work with content. As a Principal Software Engineer in our Content Pillar, you will be pivotal in driving large-scale architectural initiatives and enabling data models and databases that serve as the foundation for our next-generation content management platform. In this role, you’ll collaborate with senior engineering leaders across the organization, guiding high-impact projects that span multiple teams and services. You will play a vital role in integrating content management into Smartsheet’s broader project collaboration tools, making it seamless for users to manage and scale their content while helping teams deliver better outcomes, faster.

You Will:

  • Architect for Scale: Design and build scalable back-end services to support 100x growth in content utilization, focusing on performance and resilience.
  • Decouple Monoliths: Lead efforts to break down legacy systems, transitioning them into modular, service-oriented architectures that scale across multiple teams and platforms.
  • Drive Technical Direction: Set the vision for architecture and technology choices.
  • Mentor and Influence: Guide engineers on best practices, system design, and architecture. Provide technical mentorship to foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner with product management, platform, and other engineering teams to align on strategy and drive the execution of large-scale initiatives.

You Have:

  • 10+ years of software development experience in designing highly scalable and available systems.
  • 7+ years of programming experience with full stack technologies such as Java, Kotlin, or TypeScript.
  • 5+ years of experience building and scaling databases and data models from the ground up.
  • 2+ years of experience with cloud technologies (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Proven success in decoupling monolithic systems and handling multi-system integrations.
  • 7+ years of experience in SaaS application development, working with modern web technologies and integrating back-end services.
  • Experience with large-scale deployments: Working in an environment with frequent production releases and ensuring high availability.
  • Strong understanding of asynchronous code and designing systems that communicate across multiple services.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Legally eligible to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis
