DevOps Engineer, Edge and Developer Experience (Remote Eligible in Bulgaria)

-REMOTE, BULGARIA-

For over 20 years, Smartsheet has empowered teams to manage work seamlessly and scale solutions smarter. Now, in our most ambitious chapter yet, we are uniting human teams with AI agents. By orchestrating the work agents do best, automating manual tasks and uncovering insights at scale, we create the space for people to focus on what truly matters: judgment, creativity, and big thinking. That is magic at work, and it’s what we show up for every day.

We are seeking a DevOps Engineer II to join the Edge and Developer Experience team. Our team collaboratively operates Smartsheet's high-performance edge proxy platform and drives the adoption of internal engineering tooling. The edge proxy serves as the entry point for all traffic across Smartsheet's commercial and FedRAMP-authorized US Government environments. The team supports the lifecycle of this platform: from maintaining proxy configurations, to provisioning the multi-region AWS EKS infrastructure it runs on, to assisting with observability. Beyond the edge layer, the team also drives the integration of internal developer tooling — from а developer portal (IDP) to standardized CI/CD pipelines — that improves the engineering experience and velocity across the company.

You will work remotely from Bulgaria and report to one of our engineering leaders in Bulgaria.

You will:

  • Contribute to the edge proxy platform: Assist in maintaining, upgrading, and extending a high-performance reverse proxy. This includes writing Go and Python automation, managing container images on hardened Linux bases, and working with CDN and traffic management capabilities.
  • Build and maintain cloud infrastructure as code: Implement Terraform/Terragrunt modules and live environment configurations for EKS clusters, load balancers, IAM roles, and supporting AWS services.
  • Operate Kubernetes clusters: Assist in managing multi-region EKS deployments via GitOps workflows (e.g., FluxCD, ArgoCD) and Helm charts.
  • Support CI/CD pipelines: Help design, maintain, and improve shared GitLab CI/CD pipeline templates used across team repositories, embedding DevSecOps guardrails.
  • Automate operational toil: Build tooling for tasks such as container image patching, EKS AMI rotation, and automated patching cycles.
  • Manage observability: Help provision and maintain Datadog SLOs, monitors, and dashboards; participate in the team's on-call rotation responding to incidents.
  • Support Developer Experience initiatives: Assist in the rollout and integration of various platforms to reduce cognitive load for engineering teams.
  • Apply AI tools: Leverage AI-based workflows within your domain to improve project execution, infrastructure design, and debugging.

You Have:

  • 2–4 years of experience in DevOps, Platform Engineering, or Site Reliability Engineering.
  • A BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Hands-on experience with Terraform for managing cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience with Kubernetes operations and AWS services (EKS, VPC, IAM, ECR).
  • Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language — Go or Python preferred — for building operational automation.
  • Experience designing or maintaining CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI/CD preferred).
  • Familiarity with container image security practices and GitOps workflows.
  • A strong operational mindset with a willingness to participate in on-call rotations and incident response.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Fluency in English is required.
  • Familiarity with leveraging AI-based workflows to author or maintain code/infrastructure.
  • Legally eligible to work in Bulgaria on an ongoing basis.

Nice to Have:

  • Understanding of reverse proxies, API gateways, or load balancers (NGINX, HAProxy, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with FedRAMP or AWS GovCloud operational constraints.
  • Experience managing Datadog resources via infrastructure as code.
  • Experience integrating internal developer portals or feature flag management tools.
