Overview:
The Manager, Customs and Trade Compliance is responsible for ensuring Sol de Janeiro’s global import and export activities comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards. This role involves managing customs brokers, customs documentation, maintaining trade compliance practices, duties, and mitigating risks associated with international shipments of skincare products and fragrances. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of customs regulations, trade agreements, and ideally the skincare industry, combined with strong organizational and communication skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Broker Management: Monitor, manage, on-board, off-board, and hold accountable customs brokers to ensure shipments will efficiently and correctly clear customs
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure SDJ compliance with U.S. and international customs regulations, trade laws, and industry-specific standards related to skincare products and fragrances (with some dangerous goods requirements).
- Documentation Management: Oversee the preparation, submission and archival of all necessary import and export documentation, including customs declarations, commercial invoices, and certificates of origin.
- Risk Management: Identify and assess compliance risks associated with international shipments of standard and dangerous goods, and develop strategies to mitigate those risks.
- Opportunity Management: Identify and create business cases to reduce duties or obtain refunds via drawback programs.
- Customs Audit: Act as the primary point of contact with customs authorities and trade compliance agencies in the event of an audit. Resolve any issues or discrepancies that arise during the customs process.
- Policy Development: Develop and implement internal customs and trade compliance policies and procedures. Ensure that all relevant departments are trained on these policies.
- Audit and Monitoring: Conduct regular audits of import and export transactions to ensure compliance. Monitor changes in trade regulations and implement necessary updates to company practices.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and organized records of all customs and trade-related activities. Ensure that records are up-to-date and readily accessible for audits and inspections.
- Collaboration: Work closely with logistics, procurement, legal, tax, and other departments to ensure that trade compliance is integrated into all business processes. Provide guidance and support on compliance matters.
- Problem Solving: Address and resolve any issues related to customs delays, fines, or penalties. Provide solutions to improve efficiency and compliance in international shipping processes
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in International Business, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., Certified Customs Specialist) are a plus.
- Customs Broker license issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in customs and trade compliance, preferably within the skincare or cosmetics industry.
- In-depth knowledge of U.S. customs regulations, international trade laws, and familiarity importing product into emerging markets.
- Proven experience in managing import and export documentation and dealing with customs authorities.
- Working knowledge of dangerous goods shipping a strong plus.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Ability to interpret complex regulations and apply them effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
- Proficiency in SAP and/or Global Trade Management software is a plus.

Salary Range
$95,000 - $110,000 USD
In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for participation in a highly competitive bonus program with the possibility for overachievement based on performance and company results.
