About the role

The Corporate Counsel role is a highly qualified, team-oriented and data-first lawyer with a commercial mindset.  This is a cross-functional advisory role that involves close collaboration across all of Sonder’s various business units. 

You will collaborate with a broad range of business units including sales, marketing, product, engineering, finance and people & culture.  Your role will be to advise on and implement best practices for all aspects of Sonder, balancing legal risk with strategic business objectives. 

This role will provide you with substantial SaaS technology experience to help achieve scale in contract drafting, negotiation, and regulatory compliance support, particularly with customers, partners, and vendors. We are seeking a high performer who is adaptable, collaborative, loves to learn, has incorporated AI into augmenting capabilities, and operates with a high degree of integrity. The position demands initiative, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Revenue Generation

• Support the business in negotiating revenue-generating agreements, ensuring compliance and risk management.
• Draft, negotiate, and review a wide range of agreements and documents to support new company initiatives, including the UK.

Data Privacy

• In-depth knowledge of Australian and European data privacy laws and regulations including the Privacy Act and GDPR.  
• Advisory work across the Product & Technology teams to ensure appropriate data handling, storage and retention policies.

Strategic Projects

• Support the VP, Legal on all strategic projects, including advisory work for Sonder’s Board of Directors
• Working with large strategic partners on product development

Legal Operations

• Establish scalable processes, templates, and policies to support a high-growth environment.
• Procure and utilise technology-based solutions to automate repeatable processes.

Who are we looking for?

You’re an adaptable, collaborative and data-driven lawyer who thrives in fast-moving environments. You combine sharp legal insight with strong commercial judgment, and you’re comfortable working autonomously while building strong partnerships across the business. You enjoy solving complex problems, bringing clarity to ambiguity, and helping a purpose-driven organisation scale.

What you bring to the team:

• 3-5 years PQE with top-tier private practice experience.
• Prior experience at a startup or scale up technology company is desirable.
• Understanding of corporate and commercial law and experience drafting and negotiating a wide range of contracts.
• In-depth knowledge of Australian and European data privacy laws and regulations including the Privacy Act and GDPR would be a bonus.
