Position Summary:

The Mobile Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and servicing company vehicles, trailers, equipment, and fleet assets in the field and at designated facilities. This role promotes Sonic’s core values of safety, quality, customer service, accountability, and integrity while ensuring fleet equipment remains operational and compliant with company and regulatory standards.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. Occasional overtime, weekends, or after-hours response may be required based on operational needs and emergency repairs.

Travel:
Travel is expected for this position. A valid California Driver’s License for three years and Clean DMV is required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Mobile Mechanic position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience as a mechanic, diesel mechanic, fleet mechanic, or mobile mechanic.
  • Strong knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine systems.
  • Experience with electrical diagnostics and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with hydraulic systems and trailer maintenance preferred.
  • Experience using vehicle diagnostic software and scan tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • ASE certifications preferred.
  • CDL is a plus but not required.

Fleet Maintenance & Repair

  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and services on company vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and fuel system issues.
  • Perform brake, suspension, steering, cooling system, engine, and drivetrain repairs.
  • Conduct vehicle inspections to identify safety concerns and maintenance needs.
  • Perform bit-boom inspections on aerial/utility boom equipment to confirm safe and proper operation.
  • Troubleshoot issues using diagnostic software, scan tools, and testing equipment.
  • Respond to field service calls and perform roadside diagnostics and repairs.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
  • Ensure all repairs meet company, manufacturer, and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate with Fleet Management regarding repair priorities and vehicle availability.
  • Manage parts inventory and submit parts requests as needed.
  • Assist with vehicle upfitting, equipment installations, and fleet modifications.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and service vehicles in a safe and organized condition.
  • Support fleet compliance efforts including DOT inspections and emissions requirements.
  • Participate in emergency response and after-hours fleet support when required.
  • Perform routine vehicle inspections to verify roadworthiness and compliance.
  • Wash and clean vehicles as needed to maintain a professional fleet appearance.

Work Environment:

The Mobile Mechanic regularly works outdoors and may be exposed to:

  • Heat, cold, rain, and varying weather conditions.
  • Dust, dirt, grease, and vehicle fluids.
  • Moving mechanical equipment.
  • Roadside and construction-related environments.
  • Noise from equipment and vehicles.
  • Daily driving and field service work should be expected.

Physical Demands:

  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
  • Use hands and arms to operate tools and equipment.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds.

  • Work underneath vehicles and in confined spaces.
  • Operate company vehicles and service equipment safely.
  • Possess vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Safely drive and operate a company vehicle.
