Position Summary
Sony Honda Mobility of America (SHMA) is seeking a Senior Software Engineer – In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) to join our Engineering Development team in the San Francisco Bay Area. In this role, you will design, implement, and validate next-generation infotainment features and system integrations for AFEELA vehicles.
You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams in the U.S. and Japan to ensure our infotainment platform delivers advanced user experiences, robust performance, and compliance with global standards. This is a hands-on engineering role, where you’ll contribute to architecture, development, validation, and seamless integration of multimedia, connectivity, navigation, and third-party applications within the IVI ecosystem.
While our preference is to hire at the Senior level, we are also open to strong candidates with slightly less experience who demonstrate high potential and alignment with our team culture. Title and compensation will be adjusted accordingly.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain IVI software modules, including applications, middleware, and OS components (Android Automotive, QNX, Linux, etc.).
- Debug and troubleshoot IVI software modules in collaboration with international development and QA teams.
- Conduct validation, performance tuning, and system optimization for real-time automotive use cases.
- Collaborate with UI/UX teams to design and deliver responsive, intuitive user experiences.
- Provide developer support for partners and third parties contributing applications or frameworks.
- Support demo vehicle setup and perform problem analysis with global teams.
- Participate in requirements alignment and joint development activities with Japan HQ, partners, and external providers.
- Ensure compliance with functional safety standards and regulatory requirements.
Required Qualifications for Position
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or related field.
- 5+ years of professional software development and debugging experience on embedded systems for commercial products, such as Android OS, QNX, embedded Linux, software frameworks, and applications.
- Familiarity with multimedia frameworks, HMI/GUI development, and connectivity stacks (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LTE/5G).
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills across both software and hardware domains.
- Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional, international environment.
- Flexibility to thrive in a fast-paced, startup environment.
- Willingness to travel internationally.
Preferred Qualifications for Position
- Master’s degree or above.
- Direct experience developing on IVI platforms (Android Automotive OS, QNX, or embedded Linux).
- Hands-on experience building Android Automotive applications or services.
- Exposure to cloud service integration (voice assistants, streaming, OTA updates).
- Understanding of automotive cybersecurity and functional safety standards.
- Experience providing developer support.
- Background in team leadership or mentoring.
- Bilingual in English and Japanese a plus.
- Flexibility for extended international business trips, including immersive training abroad.
Additional Details
- Work Arrangement: Primarily on-site in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA.
- Travel Requirements: Occasional international travel (including Japan) for training, validation, and collaboration.

The anticipated annual base salary for this position is $190,000–$230,000. This range does not include any other compensation components or other benefits that an individual may be eligible for. The actual base salary offered depends on a variety of factors, which may include as applicable, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
