SENIOR FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEER

The Senior Fire Protection Engineer provides advanced design and operations engineering support and subject matter expertise in fire protection, life safety, building and fire codes, fire hazard and risk assessment of materials and processes, fire and smoke spread, fire detection, alarm and sprinkler system design, industrial fire hazards, fire investigation support, and other fire and life safety topics. This role leads complex design-evaluations, mentors junior engineers, and delivers robust solutions for SpaceX including large scale manufacturing environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead engineering design, analysis, calculations, and specifications for facility fire and life safety systems
  • Develop building and fire code compliance documents and fire life safety designs for SpaceX facilities
  • Develop AM&M (Alternate Means & Methods) to local AHJ to support performance-based design criteria that meet the intent of code
  • Perform and oversee hazardous material analysis for code compliance, including chemical classification, chemical maximum allowable quantity analysis, chemical inventory management, and related system design support
  • Support facility construction and operations teams to develop field solutions and resolve technical issues
  • Support and lead aspects of commissioning activities during pre-test and AHJ testing phases for launch site facility builds
  • Conduct fire/life safety code reviews and analyses
  • Prepare and present technical reports and presentations
  • Review and comment on shop drawing design packages developed by contractors/engineering firms
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to project team leadership

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years of experience in the design and construction of fire protection systems and/or fire protection consulting

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • Working knowledge of Building & Fire Codes and NFPA Codes & Standards
  • Degree in fire protection engineering
  • Professional Engineer License (P.E.)
  • NICET certification in relevant fire protection programs
  • Ability to lead project design teams and mentor others
  • Knowledgeable in OSHA compliance
  • Fire & Smoke software modeling capabilities
  • Construction Administration experience
  • Proficient in Autodesk Revit

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willing to work extended hours and/or weekends as needed
  • Willing to travel for specific project needs
