Boilermaker

Starbase, TX

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

BOILERMAKER

Starbase is standing up on-site power generation for the Starbase supercomputer. This boilermaker role builds the plate, duct, and tank side of that plant. You fit, align, and weld turbine exhaust duct, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) casings and stack shell, and aqueous ammonia tanks. Where the steam side is set, you also install HRSG or steam-generator casing, modules, and pressure parts so the packages can be tied in and tested.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Fit and weld turbine exhaust duct from the package outlet to the SCR, including spools, expansion joints, dampers, and turning vanes
  • Assemble SCR housing, stack shell, liner plate, and casing; land sections on the structural steel and bolt and weld them per drawings and specs
  • Erect and weld aqueous ammonia storage tanks and other field-erected or shop tanks; fit nozzles so pipefitters can tie in
  • When HRSG or steam-generator parts are on the job, install casing, modules, headers, and tubes; align and weld pressure parts to the weld map and WPS
  • Lay out, cut, bevel, and fit plate; set gaps, hi-lo, and alignment before weld-out, including purge and preheat where the WPS requires it
  • Support hydro and pneumatic tests of tanks, duct, and pressure parts: install blinds and test packs, walk the seams, and repair weld leaks
  • Rig and signal crane picks of duct, casing, stack cans, tank courses, and modules; keep every pick inside the lift plan
  • Read arrangement, plate, tank, and weld-map drawings; flag conflicts with steel, piping, and equipment before a section is landed
  • Work with millwrights at the turbine exhaust flange, ironworkers on supports and stack steel, and pipefitters at nozzles and tie-ins
  • Stage plate, weld consumables, and tools; keep laydown yards and work fronts orderly
  • Open and close work areas, including confined-space setups: protection, debris removal, scrap segregation, and end-of-shift reset so the next crew can start immediately
  • Follow fall protection, confined-space, LOTO, PPE, and permit rules; do not work under a suspended load or on live systems without authorization
  • Report damaged plate, bad fit-up, unsafe conditions, and drawing conflicts immediately

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 2+ years of hands-on boilermaker experience; OR completion of a recognized boilermaker apprenticeship; OR equivalent military experience

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Journey-level boilermaker card, NCCER Boilermaker, or equivalent credential
  • Experience fitting and welding power-plant exhaust duct, SCR or stack plate, HRSG modules, or field-erected tanks
  • Current ASME Section IX welder qualification (SMAW, FCAW, and/or GTAW) on plate or tube
  • Tube welding to a WPS, including mirror welding, backing purge, and preheat
  • AWS D1.1 for structural attachments where the weld map calls for it
  • Qualified rigger and/or crane signalperson (NCCCO, NCCER, or equivalent)
  • OSHA 10 or equivalent training, and a current confined-space qualification
  • Ability to read arrangement drawings, plate details, tank drawings, and weld maps
  • Experience working around aqueous ammonia or other power-plant emissions equipment
  • Strong safety mindset; willing to follow fall protection, confined-space, LOTO, and permit rules

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to work all shifts, overtime and/or weekends as needed
  • Must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces inside duct, stacks, tanks, and casings
  • Able to stand for long periods; climbing, bending, kneeling, crouching, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching are required
  • Able to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted
  • Must be able to work outdoors in South Texas heat, wind, and rain, and around 19% aqueous ammonia SCR equipment
  • Must wear required PPE, including fall protection, confined-space gear, and respiratory protection when specified
  • Able to work under adverse conditions (e.g., dirty, noisy, hot, confined, or at height)

ITAR REQUIREMENTS:

  • To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
