Manufacturing Specialist, Silicon Assembly (Starlink)

Bastrop, TX

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

MANUFACTURING SPECIALIST, SILICON ASSEMBLY (STARLINK)

One of the most ambitious missions that SpaceX has undertaken to date, the Starlink satellite constellation, is our solution to providing reliable internet to the entire world. In true SpaceX fashion, Starlink is taking the next step in vertical integration by bringing integrated circuit packaging and assembly in-house for development and manufacturing. You will work closely with IC packaging engineers, test engineers, equipment manufacturers, and leadership.

The success of Starlink depends on the quality, reliability, cost, manufacturability, throughput, and security of the products that you deliver. If you seek a fast-paced, dynamic environment; if you thrive on solving difficult problems where resolutions have high impact; and if you love the challenge of building something from scratch, then this role will be an ideal next career step.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Own a production room that runs multiple process types. Move across those processes and hold every one of them to the same standard.
  • Own output, yield, safety, and 5S on your shift. When performance is off, contain the issue and stay with it until the corrective action is in place.
  • Troubleshoot from first principles. Distinguish actual process behavior from alarm indications, present the supporting evidence, and identify the root cause.
  • Take on a new process in the room. Learn its constraints, recipe rules, and failure modes, then run it and train technicians to the same standard.
  • Drive continuous improvement. Identify the limiter, change the process with engineering, document the change in the work instruction, and measure the effect on throughput or first-pass yield.
  • Train technicians until they can run the process independently. Qualify them only to a standard you would defend.
  • Keep the room safe and in 5S, and hold that standard on every shift.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 3+ years of professional experience in a hands-on manufacturing environment

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with high volume or high mix manufacturing, or design for manufacture and product development life cycle, or quality tools including root cause and corrective action, PFMEAs, QMS, process auditing, and statistical analysis of quality metrics
  • Experience training technicians across more than one process type
  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment with ongoing drive for continuous improvement in all aspects of work
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and ability to succinctly present recommendations to stakeholders, the customer, and management

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Shift: 1st (day shift). Overtime as needed
  • Must be able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. unassisted
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
  • Will sometimes be working directly with the hardware on the floor and will have to be comfortable stooping, bending, and standing

ITAR REQUIREMENTS:

  • To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
