SRHG: Forward Deployed AI Engineer
Stone Ridge is a $39B diversified financial services firm that creates innovative capital markets solutions through a group of industry-leading operating companies. Founded in 2012 and based in New York, we build businesses and investment strategies in markets where deep expertise, proprietary data, and disciplined execution can create lasting advantages.
We build products we want for ourselves and invest in all our strategies alongside our partners. Everything we do—from how we approach problems to how we work with one another—is grounded in our core values: Focus. Be Humble. Be Kind.
Why Stone Ridge?
Stone Ridge is intentionally flat, meritocratic, and demanding. Ideas matter more than titles, and people are trusted with meaningful responsibility. The bargain is simple: you get to work here, and in return, you commit to keep learning, keep improving, and striving to be the best in the industry at what you do.
Stone Ridge Asset Management develops differentiated alternative investment strategies designed to provide valuable sources of return and diversification beyond traditional stocks and bonds.
The Opportunity
Stone Ridge is hiring a Forward Deployed AI Engineer to own, end-to-end, the translation of AI’s potential into production systems colleagues across the firm actually use. The person will be primarily responsible for diagnosing where AI creates step-change leverage across legal, ops, finance, and investment teams, shipping end-to-end solutions for those problems, and composing the AI platform team’s primitives and shared components into real products. The role sits on the AI team at the holdings level, reports to the Head of AI, and carries a remit across Asset Management, NYDIG, and Longtail Re.
This is a distinctive opportunity at a 300+ person firm: you will know the colleagues you build for by name, see the impact of your work in their day-to-day, and work in a tight feedback loop with a strong AI platform team rather than starting from scratch. It suits someone who genuinely enjoys turning a vague description of someone’s job into a workflow they will actually adopt, and who can balance moving fast on frontier tooling against producing work that holds up in a regulated financial environment.
What You’ll Do
- Embed with teams across all three businesses to diagnose where AI creates step-change leverage, including opportunities the team itself hasn’t surfaced.
- Ship end-to-end solutions — designing, building, and deploying — for problems spanning legal review, ops automation, finance workflows, executive support, and investment-team tooling.
- Turn vague descriptions of how someone does their job into structured, automatable workflows that run reliably in production.
- Compose the AI platform team’s primitives, agents, and shared components into products colleagues use every day, and feed back what’s missing or worth platformizing.
- Make the right tradeoffs between moving fast on frontier tooling and producing work that holds up in a regulated financial environment.
- Document, demo, and hand off each solution so the team can extend it without you, with repeat-request rate as your measure of success.
What You Bring
Required
- 5+ years building and shipping software that real users depend on, regardless of title — forward-deployed engineers, product engineers, technical PMs, data scientists who ship, and analytical generalists who code are all in scope.
- Strong hands-on engineering, with Python as the core language and enough fluency in TypeScript and frontend design to ship a usable interface when the work calls for it.
- Product and UX instincts: the ability to take a vague description of someone’s daily work and design a workflow they’ll actually use.
- Genuine curiosity about the frontier of AI tooling, paired with the judgment to tell a demo from something that will hold up in production.
- Self-directed and collaborative — able to structure your own work, identify dependencies, and sequence deliverables without waiting for a ticket, while keeping stakeholders in the loop.
- Strong communicator who genuinely enjoys the collaboration side of the role: taking briefs from anyone in the firm, asking the right questions, and translating the answers into systems.
Preferred
- Hands-on experience with agentic systems, including tool-use orchestration, evaluation harnesses, and multi-step workflows.
- A track record of taking security and reliability seriously in production, with concrete examples of the tradeoffs made.
- Domain familiarity in one or more of Stone Ridge’s areas: asset management, reinsurance, alternative credit, Bitcoin mining and custody, or energy.
- A track record as an enabler — mentoring, internal training, or documentation that lets colleagues keep going without you.
What Success Looks Like
- Colleagues across AM, NYDIG, and LTRe request you by name for their highest-friction problems, and repeat-request rate becomes the clearest signal your work lands.
- Teams can extend and maintain the solutions you’ve shipped without you, because you’ve documented and demoed them well.
- You’ve built a trusted, tight feedback loop with the AI platform team, feeding back what’s missing or worth platformizing.
- You’ve established a track record of shipping things that hold up in a regulated environment, not just impressive demos.
