Machinist

Standard Nuclear is seeking a highly skilled Machinist to join our team in developing advanced fuel and radioisotopes power solutions for earth and space. This position is ideal for an individual who brings a strong foundation in traditional machining and CNC operations and has shown the ability to learn on the fly. In this role, you will play a key role in developing custom equipment for our planned commercial-scale fuel production equipment and radioisotopes and power projects.


Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate manual and CNC machining equipment to produce precision components to exact specifications.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical documents to plan machining operations.
  • Develop and optimize CNC programs and toolpaths for custom parts.
  • Select appropriate materials, tools, and machining strategies based on job requirements.
  • Inspect finished parts to ensure they meet required tolerances and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers and technicians to refine manufacturing processes and improve shop efficiency.
  • Design and build test fixtures and apparatuses for evaluating mechanical components and systems.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Comply with all environmental health and safety, radiation protection, and quality assurance requirements at Standard Nuclear.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and optimize mechanical components for various applications.


Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience with traditional machining methods (lathe, mill, drill press, etc.).
  • Strong proficiency with CNC equipment, including the creation and modification of programs, tooling, and fixturing.
  • Demonstrated ability to manufacture custom, one-off components and prototypes.
  • Solid understanding of machining principles, tolerances, feeds, and speeds for a variety of materials.
  • A demonstrated ability to quickly learn and apply new techniques and technologies in a fast-paced environment.


Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience maintaining CNC milling equipment
  • Experience in the nuclear industry or other high-specification manufacturing environments.
  • Background in machining graphite or similarly challenging materials.
  • Experience with machine shop layout and design, including equipment selection and workflow optimization.
