Nuclear Engineer 

Standard Nuclear is seeking outstanding talent to join its dynamic team to further develop cutting edge TRISO fuel technology, nuclear thermal propulsion systems, and radioisotope power systems. We are seeking a skilled Nuclear Engineer to perform radiation transport analysis for cutting-edge nuclear technologies including nuclear thermal propulsion, radioisotope power systems, and criticality safety assessments for advanced fuel manufacturing modules. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in radiation transport and reactor physics modeling, excellent technical communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Location of Work and Travel

The position will be based at our Pilot Fuel Manufacturing (PFM) Facility in Oak Ridge, TN. Occasional travel (less than monthly) is expected for this position.

Main Responsibilities

  • Develop and run radiation transport and reactor physics models using software such as SCALE, MCNP, Serpent, or similar tools.
  • Conduct criticality safety calculations and analyses for advanced nuclear fuel manufacturing processes.
  • Support design and evaluation of nuclear thermal propulsion and radioisotope power systems through detailed simulation and analysis.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, scientific publications, and presentations to communicate findings effectively.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure design and safety requirements are met.
  • Maintain awareness of quality assurance and continuous improvement processes within nuclear engineering projects.
  • Work in compliance with radiological safety protocols and support radiological environment operations as needed.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Proven expertise in developing and running radiation transport and reactor physics models using SCALE, MCNP, Serpent, or equivalent software.
  • Proficiency in Python or a similar programming language.
  • Strong technical writing skills, with experience drafting reports, publications, and presentations.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proactive, well-organized, and highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Advanced knowledge of nuclear fuels and materials, supported by postgraduate education or relevant experience.
  • Experience or skillset related to nuclear fuel design, reactor performance requirements, and fuel qualification.
  • Hands-on experience performing criticality safety calculations and analyses.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience working in radiological environments or facilities.
