Fuel Characterization Technician

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Standard Nuclear is seeking a skilled characterization technician to join our team in Oak Ridge, TN.  As a Characterization Technician at Standard Nuclear’s main campus, you will operate state-of-the-art metallography, microscopy, X-ray diffraction, density-gradient, acid-leach, and product upgrading equipment; prepare and analyze samples of coated fuel particles and fuel elements; and help develop and draft new protocols as our capabilities evolve. You will strictly adhere to NQA-1 quality, EH&S, and radiological protection protocols—and benefit from hands-on training in advanced labs and mentorship by leading experts to support your professional growth. 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate various characterization equipment at Standard Nuclear’s Characterization Laboratory 
  • Perform sample preparation, metallography, and microscopy on coated fuel particles and ceramic nuclear fuel elements
  • Follow and perform other characterization procedures and processes including but not limited to density gradient column, x-ray diffraction, acid leaching, riffling, and upgrading
  • Basic data handling and workup of characterization data collected from equipment
  • Strictly follow quality assurance requirements and procedures and provide input and support in drafting new procedures as needed. 
  • Collect, maintain, and report characterization data
  • Maintain compliance with Standard Nuclear’s environmental health and safety (EH&S), quality assurance, and radiological protection programs

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in materials science, applied physics, chemistry, or a related field, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a laboratory or industrial setting
  • Laboratory experience, such as materials characterization, metallography, and analytical testing 
  • Familiarity with routine chemical handling procedures and policies
  • Aptitude for hands-on facility operations and the ability to carefully follow written and oral instruction
  • Attention to detail, dexterity, and ability to maintain accurate records and controls 
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted, work at elevated heights, work in outdoor environments (heat, cold, rain)
  • Ability to work in a radiological area and an environment requiring exposure to non-hazardous fumes, odors, and noise

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience with operation in radiological facilities that contain buffer areas, controlled areas, radioactive material areas, and contamination areas
  • Experience with characterization and testing under NQA-1 quality rigor
