Senior Criticality Safety Engineer
Software Engineer
Standard Nuclear is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Criticality Safety Engineer to join our growing team. In this role, you will lead criticality safety analyses for advanced nuclear fuel manufacturing processes, lead development and submittal of criticality safety related regulatory documents, drawing on extensive experience with the SCALE code system in the U.S. DOE laboratory complex or commercial nuclear fuel fabrication.
Responsibilities
- Lead development and execution of criticality safety analyses using SCALE (KENO, TSUNAMI, etc.) for TRISO fuel manufacturing modules.
- Evaluate fissile material processes including uranium feedstock handling, uranium dissolution, kernel conversion, TRISO fabrication, final fuel form manufacturing, shipping of fresh fuel materials.
- Author and review Criticality Safety Evaluations (CSEs), technical reports, and safety basis documentation in compliance with DOE and NRC requirements.
- Collaborate with design, operations, quality assurance, and licensing teams to integrate criticality safety into process design and facility modifications.
- Support regulatory interactions, technical audits, and readiness reviews; respond to findings and implement corrective actions.
- Mentor junior engineers, develop training materials, and foster best practices in criticality safety across the organization.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or closely related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience performing criticality safety analyses in the DOE laboratory system or commercial nuclear environment.
- Proven expertise with the SCALE code system (including TSUNAMI and KENO) for sensitivity, uncertainty, and criticality calculations.
- Familiarity with NRC and DOE criticality safety regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to author CSEs and safety basis documents to meet DOE/NRC expectations.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Experience with commercial nuclear fuel cycle processes, including TRISO fuel manufacturing.
- Knowledge of other modeling tools (e.g., MCNP, Serpent) and proficiency in Python for automation and workflow development.
- Track record of successful engagement with DOE site offices and/or NRC reviewers.
