EH&S Manager

The EH&S Manager is responsible for leading and managing Standard Nuclear’s environmental, health, safety, and radiological protection programs across manufacturing and laboratory operations. This role ensures that all activities are conducted safely and in compliance with company policies and applicable regulatory requirements. 

The EH&S Manager provides both strategic direction and hands-on oversight, working closely with operations, engineering, and quality teams to implement effective safety programs and maintain a strong safety culture. The role is accountable for regulatory compliance, program execution, and continuous improvement of EH&S systems as the company scales. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES  

EH&S Program Leadership & Safety Programs 

  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of site EH&S programs, aligned with regulatory requirements and industry best practices. 
  • Maintain and strengthen core safety programs, including hazard communication, lockout/tagout, electrical safety, machine guarding, fall protection, confined space, respiratory protection, PPE, ergonomics, and emergency preparedness as applicable to site operations. 
  • Integrate EH&S requirements into operational activities through hazard reviews, safe work planning, and field engagement. 
  • Drive a proactive safety culture by establishing clear expectations, reinforcing accountability, and partnering with leaders and employees to identify and correct unsafe conditions and behaviors. 

 

Industrial Hygiene & Occupational Health 

  • Provide oversight of industrial hygiene evaluations for chemical, particulate, noise, heat stress, ergonomic, respiratory, and other occupational health hazards associated with manufacturing and laboratory work. 
  • Develop and maintain exposure assessment strategies, including qualitative exposure assessments and appropriate personal or area monitoring for airborne contaminants, noise, and other workplace exposures. 
  • Coordinate with occupational health providers, consultants, or Certified Industrial Hygienists as needed to support medical surveillance, exposure evaluations, respiratory protection, and specialized IH assessments. 

 

Radiation Safety & Radiological Protection Integration 

  • Support radiation safety and radiological protection programs involving contamination control, radiological area controls, personnel monitoring, dosimetry, surveys, postings, access controls, protective clothing, and radiological work practices. 
  • Partner with radiological control personnel to ensure radiological hazards are effectively integrated into site safety planning, operational controls, training, and work execution. 
  • Provide guidance in radiological work planning, pre-job briefings, field observations, abnormal-event response, and post-job reviews for work involving radioactive material or controlled areas. 
  • Support investigation and documentation of contamination events, unexpected radiological conditions, personnel exposure concerns, or breakdowns in radiological controls, and ensure corrective actions are implemented and tracked. 

 

Regulatory Compliance, Incident Management & Risk Mitigation 

  • Ensure compliance with applicable environmental, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, and radiological requirements, including OSHA, EPA, DOE/NRC requirements as applicable, and company standards. 
  • Lead preparation for and participation in internal and external audits, inspections, and assessments; maintain audit-ready documentation and support timely resolution of findings. 
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, corrective action development, and follow-through for safety, occupational health, and radiological events or concerns. 
  • Identify operational hazards and emerging risks, track safety and compliance performance metrics, and implement mitigation strategies to reduce risk and prevent recurrence. 

 

Operational Support, Team Leadership & Continuous Improvement 

  • Maintain an active presence in manufacturing, laboratory, and operational areas to support safe work planning, high-risk activities, procedure adherence, PPE use, and implementation of required controls. 
  • Partner closely with operations, engineering, quality, maintenance, and technical teams to resolve EH&S issues and ensure safety requirements are practical, understood, and consistently applied. 
  • Lead and develop EH&S staff, specialists, and technicians; provide coaching, performance management, and support development and delivery of EH&S, industrial hygiene, and radiological training programs. 
  • Develop and maintain EH&S systems, tools, reporting processes, and performance metrics, and continuously improve programs as manufacturing and laboratory operations scale. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related field 
  • 7+ years of experience in EH&S within a nuclear environment 
  • Experience managing EH&S programs and leading safety teams 
  • Experience supporting radiation safety or radiological protection programs in nuclear, radiological, DOE, NRC, medical, research, or similarly controlled environments. 
  • Strong knowledge of EH&S regulations and compliance requirements (OSHA, EPA, DOE/NRC as applicable) 
  • Proven experience leading incident investigations and implementing corrective actions 
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills 
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with operations, engineering, and leadership teams

WORK ENVIRONMENT  

This role is based on-site in Oak Ridge, TN and involves regular work in manufacturing, laboratory, and controlled or radiological areas. 

The position requires active engagement in operational environments, including presence on the production floor and oversight of field activities. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to EH&S and radiological procedures is required.
