Position Overview

We are looking for a dedicated and hardworking Design Engineer to join the Stanley 1913 product creation team. This role offers a unique opportunity to be part of a growing engineering community at Stanley, where innovation and originality drive our technical product development. As a Design Engineer, you will contribute to developing products that inspire consumers to lead more sustainable lives. You will work closely with various teams, including industrial design, product management, production engineering, quality, and compliance, to ensure the delivery of reliable and high-quality products that uphold the Stanley promise of integrity, performance, and innovation. This hybrid role requires working out of our Seattle headquarters, with a preference for 3-5 days a week in the office.

Key Responsibilities

Design

  • Conceptualization: Collaborate with product management and industrial design to conceptualize new product ideas based on consumer and market needs.
  • Human Factors: Prototype and test designs with human factor considerations to ensure usability and comfort.

Engineering

  • Engineering Development: Determine all aspects of product engineering, including mechanism design, material selection, manufacturing methods, assembly, and performance validation, to meet product requirements and maintain design integrity. Act as the primary technical project team member throughout the product development process, from kick-off through mass production.
  • Prototyping: Create mock-ups, proof-of-concepts, and high-fidelity prototypes to evaluate designs. Apply internal and external resources for testing, drawing conclusions, and iterating designs.
  • Product Specification Creation: Document product designs through technical specification packages, 3D/2D engineering drawings, and bills of materials; oversee change management.
  • Design for Manufacturing: Collaborate with global teams to ensure manufacturability and understand cost drivers. Travel internationally to resolve product issues and build relationships.
  • Product Validation: Work with quality assurance and compliance to develop test plans against function, performance, safety, and sustainability standards. Conduct testing of prototypes and manufactured samples, performing root cause analysis to identify and remedy failure modes.
  • Intellectual Property: Identify potential infringement issues and/or protectable innovations.

Project Management / Communication

  • Timeline Adherence: Actively participate in maintaining project schedules in collaboration with project management. Ensure transparency across multiple active projects.
  • Product Cost: Support cost engineering efforts to meet retail cost and margin goals.
  • Engineering Communication: Facilitate technical communication between the project team and international factory partners to clearly convey product needs and document designs.
  • Presentations: Effectively communicate to a variety of audiences, including peers and leadership, throughout the product development cycle.

Who You Are

  • Demonstrates a strong ability to conceptualize, design, and validate mechanical systems. Shows exceptional intuition for understanding the functionality and potential failures of various components.
  • Methodical approach to problem identification, root cause analysis, and corrective action. Uses creativity and curiosity to tackle problems quickly and iteratively.
  • Understands and appreciates the graphic, color, materiality, and form of products.
  • Experience with analysis tools: DFMEA, FEA, DOE, mold flow, and tolerancing.
  • Proficient in creating prototypes at appropriate fidelity levels for testing and iteration.
  • Experience collaborating with vendors on manufacturing and issue resolution.
  • Embraces change and looks beyond the norm to develop new products.
  • Takes ownership of projects; decisive and mindful of resource usage.
  • Acts with intelligence, self-direction, and accuracy with minimal guidance.
  • Applies the power of the team and builds cross-functional relationships.
  • Clearly communicates with collaborators, customers, partners, and team members both internally and externally.
  • Provides the right messaging to the audience and wins consensus.
  • Open to team needs and supportive beyond immediate responsibilities.

  • Considers the financial impact and cost of actions for our product creation process.
  • BS in engineering or a related field, or 6+ years of equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years prior experience in a similar position and or industry.
  • CAD: Proficient in SolidWorks, with strong CAD experience required.
  • Experience with mass manufacturing techniques, including injection molding and metal forming. Experience with soft goods/cut and sew is a plus.
  • Proficient with MS Office, project management software (preferably Smart Sheets), PLM systems (preferably Centric), and Adobe Creative Suite (desirable).
  • Machine Shop / Rapid Prototyping: Experienced with machine shop, rapid prototyping, and lab tools.
  • Collaboration: Strong interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills. Experienced in collaborating with international teams and non-native English speakers. Ability to build trust and influence within a cross-functional organization.
  • Consumer Centric Approach: Passionate about creating products and user experiences that prioritize the needs of the consumer.

The base pay range for this position is for a successful candidate within the state listed. The successful candidate’s actual pay will be based on multiple factors such as work location, job-related knowledge, skills, qualifications, and experience.

Salary Range

$100,000 - $120,000 USD
