About the role:
Starburst is looking for a Python Engineer to join our Trino team to build and maintain client libraries that integrate with Starburst products. You will work on designing robust APIs and tools that make it easier for developers and data teams to interact with modern query engines. Prior knowledge of the Trino query engine is not required, but strong experience with databases, query protocols, and distributed data systems is essential.
This is a great opportunity to deepen your expertise in a rapidly evolving technology and make a significant impact on leading data analytics products. Our managed SaaS and on-premise Data Platform Product offerings provide unique and interesting problems to be solved, and incredible learning opportunities for any engineer. Starburst offers the opportunity to compete at global scale with other elite vendors in the Data Analytics space.
Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and maintain Python client libraries for Trino connectivity and query execution for the Starburst Enterprise Platform, or the Starburst Galaxy.
- Develop clean, idiomatic APIs for interacting with Trino/Starburst systems.
- Collaborate with your team backend engineers to support new features and protocol extensions.
- Ensure high performance, scalability, and reliability of client libraries.
- Write tests, documentation, and examples for both internal and external developers.
- Contribute to packaging, distribution, and versioning of Python packages.
- Work in a fast paced environment
- We prioritize focused work, ensuring minimal time is spent in formal meetings, allowing you to concentrate on coding and PR reviews
- Being able to clearly articulate your ideas in writing across various communication channels like Slack, GitHub PRs, and Design Documents is essential in our globally distributed team
- Provide exceptional customer support for both internal and external customers
- We’re pretty humbled by the trust that our customers give our Query Engine to crunch their data and handle with utmost seriousness the problems they report to us
Some of the things we look for:
- Strong proficiency in Python (3.x).
- Experience with database protocols (e.g., JDBC/ODBC, PostgreSQL/MySQL wire protocol, gRPC, REST, or similar).
- Solid understanding of SQL and relational database concepts.
- Experience with data processing libraries (e.g., Pandas, Arrow, Numpy, Polars) and/or distributed computing frameworks (e.g., Ray, Dask).
- Familiarity with HTTP, authentication, and network protocols.
- Experience with building and distributing Python packages (PyPI, wheels, dependency management).
- Strong testing, debugging, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstration of ownership, grit and bias for action - core values at Starburst.
- Ability to Travel: This role will require occasional in-person travel for purposes including but not limited to new hire onboarding, team and department offsites, customer engagements, and other company events. Actual travel expectations may vary by role and business needs.
Bonus points:
- Knowledge of Trino, Starburst Enterprise, or Starburst Galaxy.
- Experience contributing to open-source projects.
- Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure) and modern CI/CD pipelines.
- Understanding of query federation, distributed query engines, or data lakehouse architectures.
Where could this role be based?
- This role is based in our Warsaw office and follows a hybrid model, with an expectation of being onsite 1-2 days per week.
