The Role 

We are looking for a Tech Lead for our Payments Engineering team. Payments is core to how our customers operate, and you will own the architecture and technical direction of the platform that moves real money for institutions around the world. This is a hands-on leadership role. You will set the technical bar, make the calls on architecture and security, and lead a significant program of work: consolidating a multi generation payments estate onto our modern payment orchestration platform, while keeping every existing integration reliable in production. You will work across a genuinely hybrid technology landscape: a modern cloud-native microservice platform, a large established .NET monolith, and modern React front-ends. What You Will Own

• Own the technical vision and architecture for the Payments platform end to end, from PSP integrations through orchestration, tokenization, and settlement flows. 
• Lead the consolidation of legacy payment integrations onto our modern Cloud Payment Service (CPS), including the migration of direct debit tokens and recurring payment mandates, which is high-risk, high-value work.
• Drive the design and delivery of new payment service provider (PSP) integrations across a portfolio of 20+ gateways, defining the patterns the rest of the team follows.
• Set and uphold security and compliance standards for a system that handles cardholder and bank data: encryption, secrets management, server-to-server auth, and PCI-aware design.
• Design safe, feature-flagged rollouts and migration paths so changes ship incrementally with clear rollback.
• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, raise the code-review and testing bar, and grow the technical capability of the team.
• Partner with Product, Engineering Management, and customer-facing teams to sequence delivery and manage the operational risk of live payment changes.
• Stay hands-on: write and review code, pair on the hard problems, and lead by example on quality

What We Work With

• C# / .NET across two runtimes: a cloud-native platform on .NET 6 and an established .NET Framework 4.8.1 monolith.
• Azure as the primary cloud: Cosmos DB, Key Vault, Service Bus, Front Door, Azure Functions, Application Insights.
• SQL Server with a custom in-house ORM in the monolith.
• React 18 + TypeScript front-ends (payment configuration and management UIs), with GraphQL and modern component tooling. 
• Infrastructure as code with Bicep and Terraform; CI/CD on GitHub Actions.
• Feature flags (LaunchDarkly and in-house) for controlled rollout
• PSP / payment gateway integration patterns (iframe-hosted and redirect-based), tokenization, and callback/webhook handling.
• Recurring payments and direct debit / mandate lifecycles.
• Payment security: field-level encryption, JWT server-to-server auth, and OWASP / PCI-aware engineering

Required Qualifications 

• Deep experience integrating with third-party payment providers or comparable financial / regulated external APIs.
  
• Proven experience building and operating production software, with a track record as a technical leader on a complex platform.
• Strong background in distributed systems and service-oriented or microservice architecture, including designing for resilience, idempotency, and eventual consistency.
• Demonstrated ownership of security-sensitive systems and a genuine instinct for handling sensitive data safely.
• Experience leading large migrations or platform consolidations in a live, revenue critical system without disrupting customers.
• Excellent judgement on trade-offs: you know when to modernise, when to leave working code alone, and how to de-risk both.
• A strong quality culture: test-driven development, meaningful code review, and automated verification are how you work, not overhead.
• Clear communicator who can align engineers, product, and stakeholders around a technical direction.
  

Preferred Qualifications 

• Direct experience with PCI DSS scope and compliance.
• Experience modernising a .NET Framework monolith toward cloud-native services. 
• Familiarity with the Australian, UK, US, or EU payments landscapes and their local gateways. 
• Experience with cross-region deployment and data residency requirements.
