About the Data Infrastructure Team: 

The Data Infrastructure team is the backbone of StarTree’s SaaS offering, focused on building world-class data ingestion, storage, and serving systems. This team is responsible for scaling and evolving StarTree’s Pinot Engine and the corresponding data platforms, ensuring we deliver top-tier performance and reliability. About the Role:

We are looking for an Engineering Manager with a passion for building large-scale distributed systems to join and grow our Data Infrastructure team. In this role, you will:

  • Manage, mentor, and grow a team of 5-8 high-performing engineers working on foundational real-time database infrastructure components, including storage, indexing, query execution, cluster management, and ingestion.
  • Act as a player/coach: Stay close to the technical details, participate in design discussions and reviews, while focusing primarily on supporting your team members to amplify and multiply the impact of their individual work.
  • Foster a healthy team culture: Champion your team’s successes and ensure recognition. Step in as needed to provide direction, clarity, and set the right context to create an environment where engineers thrive and projects succeed.
  • Work closely with field teams to identify investments in performance, scalability, and reliability. Collaborate with product management and leadership to drive technical vision and strategy, shaping StarTree’s roadmap to deliver compelling product differentiators and improvements.
  • Define and implement processes that promote effective communication and cross-functional collaboration. Own processes and tracking for operational excellence and project lifecycle management.
  • Partner with product marketing and open-source community leaders to support engineering participation in evangelism, content creation, and community engagement.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 7+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with a strong background in database internals, storage systems, query optimization, or distributed data systems.  
  • Experience with technologies like Apache Pinot, Kafka, Spark, or similar real-time analytics and streaming systems.
  • Proven technical leadership experience acting as a Tech Lead or Tech Lead Manager, having led several projects with 4+ engineers while remaining hands-on. Ability to dive into complex technical details and capable of leading engineers to peak performance.
  • Excellent communication skills, humility, and a willingness to wear multiple hats to ensure team success.
  • Experience working with globally distributed and remote teams.
  • Startup experience is preferred.

Additional Information:

This role is based in Mountain View, California. We follow a hybrid work policy, with in-office collaboration on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
