Software Development Engineer, Data Replication Engine (C++ / Databases)
About Stelo
For over 30 years Stelo’s products have freed organizations from the complexities and difficulties of static data pipelines. Our software is an enterprise-class data replication tool that delivers data dynamically from anywhere to anywhere for BI analysis, reporting, and prediction, or for managing business operations, B2B interactions, and supply chains. Stelo combines powerful, purpose-built software with world-class service and support. From end-to-end expertise and problem ownership to deep knowledge of all operating systems, platforms, and database systems, Stelo gets customers up and running and keeps them there.
Stelo Software Engineer
Stelo is hiring a Software Engineer to work on the engine behind our data replication platform: the software that moves live data between Db2, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and cloud platforms such as Snowflake and Databricks, for customers who depend on it every day. The engine is built in C++ and Java, and you will work in both.
Our ideal candidate is a database engineer first and a strong C++ programmer second. What sets this work apart is the database knowledge it demands. You understand how databases work, from the SQL on the surface to the drivers that carry it to the transaction logs underneath. We especially value experience with IBM Db2. You work independently on a small remote team and own what you build through to production.
You also use AI coding assistants as real leverage, as we do every day. You know what to build, you review generated code critically, and you prove it correct before it ships.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, test, and maintain core components of the replication engine, from capture through apply.
- Integrate with a wide range of sources and targets: Db2, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL; cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Kafka and Microsoft Fabric.
- Keep replication correct, resilient, and fast across on-premises and cloud environments, and tune data movement across CPU, memory, I/O, and network.
- Work with support, QA, and product to investigate complex customer issues and ship robust, timely fixes and enhancements.
- Help shape design decisions for the platform, including the internal APIs, data structures, and abstractions that simplify cross-database support and configuration.
- Write well-documented, testable code, and review your teammates’ code.
Required Qualifications
- Strong SQL and a working understanding of database internals, such as transaction logs, recovery, locking and isolation, query execution, or replication.
- 5+ years building production systems-level or backend software in C++ (for example databases, storage engines, distributed systems, message brokers, or other high-throughput services).
- Hands-on ODBC or JDBC experience: connection lifecycle, statement execution, parameter and result-set handling, and diagnostics (SQLSTATE, vendor error codes).
- Solid command of multithreading and synchronization in C++, including locks, condition variables, and thread-safe data structures.
- Cross-platform C++ development for Windows (Visual Studio, MSBuild) and Linux (GCC), including debugging and profiling on both.
- Professional use of AI coding assistants, with the judgment to review and test what they produce.
- Clear written and spoken communication, and comfort working on a fully remote, distributed team.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with IBM Db2, especially journaling on Db2 for i.
- Hands-on experience with data replication, change data capture (CDC), ETL tools, or log-based data movement.
- Hands-on experience with JDBC drivers and performance tuning across multiple relational databases.
- Integration experience with Databricks, Snowflake, BigQuery, or Microsoft Fabric.
- Working proficiency in Java.
- Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, SSL/TLS) and experience diagnosing connectivity and performance issues in hybrid environments.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD practices.
- Experience with gRPC and Protocol Buffers.
Structure and Compensation
- The position is 100% remote, full-time, and exempt
