Location: Stone Barns Center For Food And Agriculture in Pocantico Hills, New York

Supervisor: Ecology & GIS Manager, Senior Land Manager

Employment Classification: Full-time/Non-exempt

Frequency of pay: Bi-weekly

Rate: $15/hour

Schedule: Summer 2021; 25 hours/week for 8 weeks; At this point in time, we are considering the internship as hybrid; some remote work, some work will result in the field, visiting the area they are mapping to gather or verify data. 

The GIS Intern reports to the Ecology & GIS Manager and Senior Land Manager, this is an opportunity for individuals currently studying geography, geographic information systems, and data science who are interested in participating in and supporting an extensive ArcGIS-based ecological monitoring program on a diversified working farm, primarily on pastures grazed by cattle, sheep and goats. This work will help build an understanding of how decisions affect the health of the soil, water quality, plants, and biotic communities we steward. Findings will inform creative solutions to food system issues and how our food choices can impact the land.

Frequent professional communication and interaction with internal stakeholders and some external sources to complete the job is required. This individual will gain an understanding of how the ecological data is used in conjunction with various areas of focus on the farm including Cold Storage, Preservation, Milling & Baking, Meat Processing, Arts & Ecology through collaboration and scheduled check-ins with Stone Barns Center stakeholders and other interns. This cross-departmental opportunity will allow the individual to gain valuable professional work experience, knowledge and skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the creation of maps and graphs, using GIS software and data collection equipment
  • Perform research to obtain and expand existing datasets 
  • Help gather and report on GIS data and determine how data sets are best utilized through GIS
  • Compile data from many sources
  • Compile data for statistics to incorporate into documents and reports 
  • Help analyze and model relationships between geographic sets 
  • Help operate and maintain GIS system hardware, software, and peripherals
  • In consultation with the database coordinator, prepare an independent ArcGIS based analysis of some aspect of the Stone Barns data set, potentially incorporating publicly available datasets and/or remote sensing data
  • Assist with presentation of information to the team and stakeholders in verbal or written format 
  • Participate occasionally in pastured livestock activities with Livestock/Ecological Team monitoring activities 
  • This position assumes responsibility for the workplace safety of self and co-workers, and for the safety of the work location, exercises and promotes safe behaviors and shows support of programs, rules and policies regarding safety

  • A student who is committed to exploring the intersection between a food and farming culture

  • Able to use GIS software to analyze data and create maps for internal purposes
  • Involved in launching and supporting online mobile maps 
  • Background in the sciences and computer programming will be given preference

  • Able to work independently and as a part of an academic pod
  • Effective in verbal, written and interpersonal communications; able to communicate clearly with various personnel to share/gather information
  • Have access to the internet and a quiet space to work on a computer. Access to a computer is not required and can be provided.
