Position Opening:
SMC is actively looking for a Senior Level Power Studies Engineer to direct and execute electrical power studies (including short circuit, coordination, arc flash, reliability, and Neher-McGrath thermal ampacity studies) for mission critical projects. Typical project types may include greenfield and brownfield data center facilities, fit-out packages for hyperscale and enterprise clients of colocation providers, conceptual designs and feasibility studies, and studies of existing facilities designed by others.
This candidate shall be capable of executing electrical power studies independently and directing the work of a small team of junior and/or mid-level power studies engineers. The electrical studies scope will typically be a part of a broader project and therefore this candidate will be highly capable of interfacing with design leads within SMC (most especially the lead electrical engineer) as well as externally including clients, contractors, and equipment manufacturers.
The ideal candidate will additionally be involved in growing the power studies expertise within the company, through internal training; development and implementation of design standards; oversight and execution of quality control practices. The candidate will work in concert with our power studies lead to help grow the capabilities of our overall department.
Responsibilities:
This candidate will have the opportunity to direct and execute electrical power studies while coordinating with clients and design leads from all disciplines. This candidate shall have the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and with clients while being able to meet scheduled project deadlines.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Develop and complete power studies for mission critical buildings and campuses including campus level medium voltage distribution; highly redundant power systems including various redundancy topologies such as distributed and block redundant; on-site generation and UPS backup; and typical house power distribution systems.
- Coordinate with electrical design leads, contractors, and equipment manufacturers to collect all relevant information needed to build system models.
- Review client standards, design criteria, applicable standards, and best practices in order to understand design requirements and ensure power system design meets all applicable requirements.
- Understand local and national construction codes and project specifications and how they relate to the content of electrical power studies.
- Utilize SKM, ETAP, Reliasoft BlockSim, and other specialized tools to complete required studies.
- Have experience with the use of Microsoft tools such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.
- Meet project deadlines, including working necessary hours to complete major deliverables.
- Have the ability to travel when required to project sites (typically less than 5% travel).
- Have the ability to clearly communicate with others in both written and spoken forms.
- Lead other engineers and designers, and coordinate the tasks of multiple teams to execute project delivery of several projects simultaneously.
- Mentor and train other engineers and designers to develop electrical power studies knowledge base.
- Maintain excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Qualifications:
- 4-year degree in electrical engineering or architectural engineering with an electrical focus preferred. 2-year degrees and EET degrees with work experience will be considered.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in facility electrical design, particularly using SKM to complete power system studies.
- Experience in electrical power studies such as short circuit, coordination, and arc flash for larger industrial and commercial buildings (greater than 1000 buses) is preferred, with experience in mission critical design (including multiple scenarios, alternate power paths, and complex topologies) a strong plus.
- Experience performing and reviewing Neher-McGrath underground thermal studies is strongly preferred.
- Experience working across the entire construction process, from schematic design through construction administration, including review of submittals and shop drawings, and field work such as existing condition surveys, site observations, and punch lists is a plus.
- Experience leading small teams and interfacing with clients is strongly preferred.
- Experience using construction management tools such as Procore and Autodesk Construction Cloud is a plus.
- Knowledge of controls and monitoring systems for mechanical and electrical systems is a plus.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred; however unlicensed candidates with appropriate on-the-job experience are welcome to apply.
Compensation:
Base Compensation: $125,000-$350,000 (Actual compensation is subject to variation due to factors such as education, experience, skills and/or location)
