In this role, you'll develop and deploy machine learning models that help us better understand our customers, optimize marketing decisions, and drive long-term customer engagement and growth.
Our Data Science team plays a critical role in shaping business decisions across StubHub, leveraging statistical modeling, machine learning, and experimentation to solve complex problems at scale. You'll work closely with Product, Engineering, and Analytics partners to turn customer data into actionable strategies and production-ready solutions.
This is an opportunity to take ownership of high-impact initiatives, many of which are still in their early stages, and help build the systems and capabilities that will shape how StubHub engages with its customers.

As a Senior Data Scientist focused on Direct Marketing & Personalization, you'll own the strategy, development, and execution of sophisticated modeling initiatives that improve how StubHub understands, reaches, and retains its customers.
You'll lead projects end to end, from identifying opportunities and developing statistical and machine learning models to deploying solutions into production and measuring their business impact. You'll have significant autonomy in shaping your work, collaborating across teams, and influencing how data science is applied to marketing and personalization challenges.
We're looking for someone with a strong statistical foundation, deep technical expertise, and the ability to independently navigate ambiguous problems. You’ll need strong skills in developing models, designing experiments, and communicating complex findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.ntial.
Location: Hybrid (3 days in office/2 days remote) – New York, NY or Century City, CA
What You'll Do
- Develop advanced customer segmentation models: Build sophisticated user clustering and profiling models to better understand customer behaviors, preferences, and purchasing patterns, and integrate these insights into targeting and personalization strategies.
- Optimize direct marketing campaigns: Develop predictive models and decision-making frameworks to determine which customers to engage, when to engage them, and how to coordinate messaging across individual campaigns and broader marketing initiatives.
- Improve acquisition efficiency: Identify and act on opportunities to shift customer traffic from paid search toward direct channels through predictive modeling and personalized interventions that encourage direct engagement.
- Measure long-term marketing impact: Develop analytical and experimental approaches to understand how direct marketing influences repeat purchases, customer retention, and Gross Merchandise Sales (GMS) beyond immediate conversion.
- Own machine learning models end to end: Design, develop, deploy, and maintain scalable models in production, applying strong engineering principles throughout the model lifecycle.
- Drive rigor in experimentation: Advise on experimental design and other methods to evaluate model performance, measure business outcomes, and inform decision-making.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives: Partner closely with Product, Engineering, and Analytics to identify opportunities, define project roadmaps, navigate competing priorities, and deliver measurable business impact.
- Translate complex insights into action: Communicate technical approaches, tradeoffs, and results clearly to stakeholders, ensuring models and recommendations are understood and adopted.
- Contribute to technical excellence: Share best practices and help advance the technical capabilities of StubHub's broader Data Science organization.
What You've Done
- 5+ years of relevant experience in Data Science, Applied Machine Learning, or a closely related quantitative field.

- Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL, including experience working with large-scale datasets and modern analytical tools and libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, and scikit-learn, and gradient-boosting frameworks (e.g., LightGBM, XGBoost).
- Experience developing, deploying, and maintaining machine learning models in production environments, with an understanding of model lifecycle management and scalable implementation.
- Hands-on experience designing, evaluating, or overseeing A/B tests, with a strong understanding of statistical validity, experiment interpretation, and common experimental pitfalls.
- Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex Data Science initiatives from problem definition through technical execution and measurable business impact.
- Experience partnering with Product, Engineering, and other cross-functional stakeholders to translate ambiguous business needs into technical solutions.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain sophisticated modeling approaches and statistical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience working with cloud-based data platforms such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, or similar technologies.
Nice to Have
- An MS or PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or another closely related quantitative discipline.
- Experience in consumer technology, e-commerce, two-sided marketplaces, or other data-rich consumer businesses.
- Experience applying machine learning to customer segmentation, personalization, recommendation systems, or audience optimization.
- Familiarity with direct marketing, lifecycle marketing, CRM, or customer acquisition strategies.
- Experience with marketing experimentation, incrementality measurement, or causal inference methodologies.
- Experience working with cloud infrastructure such as AWS or Azure.
What We Offer
- Accelerated Growth Environment: An environment designed for swift skill and knowledge enhancement, where you have the autonomy to lead experiments and tests on a massive scale.
- Top Tier Compensation Package: Competitive base, equity, and upside that tracks with your impact.
- Flexible Time Off: Enjoy unlimited Flex Time Off, giving you the flexibility to manage your schedule and take time to recharge as needed.
- Comprehensive Benefits Package: Prioritize your well-being with a comprehensive benefits package, featuring 401k, and premium Health, Vision, and Dental Insurance options.

Unlike roles focused primarily on maintaining or incrementally improving established systems, this position offers the opportunity to build new models, frameworks, and solutions from the ground up.
You'll have significant ownership over your projects, the autonomy to shape technical approaches, and the opportunity to see your work directly influence business decisions and customer experiences.
You'll also collaborate with a highly skilled Data Science team that values technical excellence, independent thinking, cross-functional partnership, and measurable impact.
The anticipated gross base pay range is below for this role. Actual compensation will vary depending on factors such as a candidate’s qualifications, skills, experience, and competencies.
