Student Internship - Mitigation Enhancement Analyst

Holyoke, Massachusetts, United States

ISO New England is the independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England’s ongoing transition to clean energy.

Internship Title - Mitigation Enhancement Analysis Intern
Department: Internal Market Monitoring
Minimum education level: Rising senior
Preferred majors: Economics, Business, Finance, or Data Science

Ready to put your analytical skills to work on a mission that matters? Join ISO New England’s Internal Market Monitoring team and help examine the data and market behavior behind one of the nation’s most dynamic electricity systems. You’ll collaborate with economists, engineers, financial analysts, and data scientists, build clear visualizations from complex information, and gain firsthand experience supporting competitive wholesale electricity markets and the region’s evolving energy future.

Who We Are
ISO New England oversees the 24/7 operation of the power grid covering the six New England states and administers the region’s more than $10 billion “stock exchange” for the buying and selling of wholesale electricity. The power system is constantly evolving as new technologies emerge and energy policies evolve. There is a lot going on at our organization behind the scenes to make sure the region has reliable, competitively priced wholesale electricity today and into the future.

About the Team
The Internal Market Monitoring team helps protect consumers and market participants in New England’s wholesale electricity markets. The group mitigates the effects of uncompetitive bidding, identifies potential market design issues and manipulation, and evaluates market performance. You’ll learn from a multidisciplinary team that brings together expertise in economics, engineering, financial analysis, and data science.

What You’ll Work On

  • Partner with economists, financial analysts, engineers, and data scientists to support the implementation of market-power mitigation rules.
  • Pull, organize, and analyze complex market data to identify trends and meaningful insights.
  • Create clear, accessible visualizations and summaries for colleagues and management.
  • Evaluate market results and market-participant behavior to support fair, competitive energy prices.
  • Build practical knowledge of wholesale electricity markets and ISO New England’s role in the transition to cleaner, more efficient energy systems.

How You’ll Make an Impact
Your analysis will help the team better understand market outcomes and participant behavior—work that supports competitive conditions, informed decisions, and reliable electricity for communities across New England. You’ll finish the internship with meaningful project experience, stronger data-storytelling skills, and a clearer view of career paths at the intersection of analytics, economics, and energy.

What You Bring

  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Experience working with large or complex data sets and drawing useful insights
  • Ability to communicate findings clearly through visuals and concise explanations
  • A self-motivated, highly organized, and detail-oriented approach
  • Curiosity, initiative, and the ability to collaborate effectively on a team
