The Super-Sod DOT Fleet Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing our fleet of power units, trailers, piggyback lifts, and other logistics equipment. This full-time role plays a critical part in ensuring our transportation operations run smoothly and meet all safety and DOT compliance standards.

Essential Functions

  1. Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs tractor-trailer bodies, systems, and components as well as other fleet vehicles and machines.
  2. Performs preventive maintenance inspections and service on power units, trailers, and piggyback lifts.
  3. Assembles and dissembles vehicle engines and cleans the fuel tanks.
  4. Oils and lubricates moving parts on power units, trailers, and piggyback lifts to ensure effective performance.
  5. Maintains hubs and axles and adjusts or replaces them when required.
  6. Inspects, services, and replaces trailer parts, including tires.
  7. Checks and repairs the brake, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  8. Tests all systems and equipment for performance issues.
  9. Records and reports damaged, worn, or broken parts.
  10. Ensures that trailers meet the U.S. Department of Transportation's road safety requirements.
  11. Orders and installs replacement parts for vehicles and machines in Limble CMMS
  12. Identifies the causes of unexpected breakdowns of all logistics fleet vehicles and machines.
  13. Repairs broken and out of service power units, trailers, and piggyback lifts quickly and efficiently.
  14. Prepares reports documenting work performed.
  15. Cleans, organizes, inventories, stocks, and otherwise maintains shop areas, parts, tools, and supplies.
  16. Coordinates with Logistics management and supervisors to schedule regular maintenance or repairs on fleet vehicles and machines, including power units, trailers, and piggyback lifts.
  17. Makes necessary modifications and implements tests runs; confers with Senior Safety Manager regarding test results and makes additional alterations to logistics fleet vehicles and machinery, as necessary.
  18. Occasionally operates various mechanical equipment used in logistics and transportation, such as power units, trailers, piggyback lifts, diesel trucks, fleet vehicles, and equipment used to perform diagnostic-based maintenance.
  19. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This job operates in exposure to direct sunlight and weather 50% of the time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This job also operates in an office and, in most cases, from a remote maintenance shop location. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and digital filing cabinets.

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This employee requires full range of motion of arms and legs and requires constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Winter 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM • Spring & Fall 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM • Summer 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM •

On Call Duties may be required to accommodate repairs or ensure vendor availability. Days and hours can change at the discretion of the Senior Safety Manager.

 

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day.

 

Required Education and Experience

  1. DOT, ASE Certification.
  2. 2+ years’ experience as a trailer mechanic.
  3. 2+ years operating heavy equipment, including forklifts.
  4. In-depth knowledge of vehicle systems, such as hydraulics, air brakes, and electrical systems.
  5. Lead mechanic or management/supervisor experience.
  6. Extensive experience with vehicle diagnostic equipment.
  7. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  9. Must be willing and able to work in a safety-aware environment.
  10. Heavy equipment operating experience preferred.
  11. Must be 19 years of age or older.
  12. All potential new hires will be subjected to a pre-employment motor vehicle, criminal background check and drug screen.

 

Preferred Experience

  1. CDL experience
  2. Associate degree in heavy truck technology, diesel mechanics, or comparable.
  3. 2+ years’ lead mechanic experience or management/supervisor experience.

 

Hourly Pay Range

$20 - $28 USD
