In this hands-on role, you’ll help with bagging compost, mowing, spraying weeds, and loading trucks. Under manager supervision, The Compost Laborer supports day-to-day operations at the compost facility, including bagging compost, spraying weeds, mowing site vegetation, and loading trucks. This position requires the ability to perform physical labor outdoors in various weather conditions, operate light machinery, and follow safety protocols.
Essential Functions

- Operates various mechanical equipment used in agricultural production, such as mowers, loaders, and irrigation equipment.
- Bag and palletize compost for distribution, ensuring correct weight and labeling of each bag.
- Operate compost bagging equipment and perform routine maintenance checks to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Spray and control weeds around the compost field using approved herbicides and application equipment, following safety guidelines and application schedules.
- Mow and maintain vegetation around the compost site using mowers and trimmers to promote site safety and cleanliness.
- Load bulk compost and palletized product onto trucks using skid steers, loaders, or forklifts as required.
- Assist with compost site upkeep, including cleaning work areas, removing debris, and ensuring pathways and loading zones remain clear.
- Follow all safety and environmental regulations, including proper use of PPE, handling of chemicals, and equipment operation procedures.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding work progress, maintenance needs, or safety concerns.
- Perform physical labor in varying outdoor conditions, including lifting, bending, walking, and standing for extended periods.
- Operates various tools, machinery, and equipment for composting methods.
- Performs other related duties assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position requires no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This job operates in exposure to direct sunlight and weather 90% of the time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
Physical Demands

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This employee requires full range of motion of arms and legs and requires constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.
Typical/ Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours can change at the discretion of the Compost Manager, though typical hours of work Monday-Friday are:
Winter & Fall 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM · Spring & Summer 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM
Travel
Requires little to no travel time.
Required Education and Experience
- Experience operating farm equipment, such as tractors, forklifts, or mowers.
- Must be able to work in a safety aware environment.
- Bilingual skills are desired but not required
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Pre-employment drug screening required.
Hourly Pay Range
$16 - $20 USD
