Environmental Engineer

Summary
The Environmental Engineer is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations within a high-volume automotive die casting facility. This role will lead environmental programs related to air emissions, wastewater, hazardous waste, stormwater, and pollution prevention, with a strong emphasis on continuous improvement and sustainability in manufacturing operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Regulatory Compliance:
- Monitor, interpret, and ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations (EPA, OSHA, DEQ, etc.) applicable to die casting operations.
- Prepare and submit required environmental reports (e.g., Tier II, TRI, NPDES, RCRA, SPCC).
- Oversee environmental permits (air, water, waste) and coordinate renewals, modifications, and inspections.
Air Emissions Management:
- Manage air quality programs including stack testing, control equipment monitoring, and emission inventories from melting furnaces, casting machines, and finishing operations.
Waste Management:
- Coordinate handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams including spent foundry sand, slag, dross, machining fluids, and scrap metal.
- Implement waste reduction strategies and recycling programs.
Water and Wastewater:
- Oversee the operation and compliance of process wastewater pretreatment systems and stormwater runoff controls.
- Maintain and optimize treatment processes for cooling water and metal finishing systems.
Sustainability & Pollution Prevention:
- Develop and lead initiatives to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and minimize environmental footprint of die casting operations.
- Support ISO 14001 Environmental Management System initiatives.
Auditing & Training:
- Conduct internal environmental audits and support external audits from regulatory agencies or customers.
Train employees on environmental compliance, spill response, and best practices.
Incident Investigation:
- Lead investigations of environmental incidents or spills, ensure corrective actions are implemented, and update protocols as necessary.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
Experience:
- 3–5 years of environmental engineering experience in a manufacturing setting, preferably in metal casting, die casting, or automotive industry.
- Strong knowledge of EPA and state environmental regulations.
- Experience with air permit compliance, waste management, and wastewater treatment in a foundry or casting environment is highly preferred.
Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, environmental data management systems, and permit tracking software.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to lead cross-functional teams and work independently in a fast-paced environment. - Primarily based in a manufacturing plant environment with regular exposure to high temperatures, molten metal, noise, and industrial equipment.
- Must be able to wear appropriate PPE and walk through all areas of the plant.
