Tooling Engineer
Sustainable Talent is looking for a seasoned Tooling Engineer to support our client's growing team! This is a W-2 full-time Direct Hire position based in the Greater Louisville, KY area. The Tooling Engineer will be responsible for the design, procurement, launch, and continuous improvement of die cast tooling used in the manufacturing of aluminum or magnesium automotive components. This role ensures tooling solutions meet quality, cost, and timing targets, and supports production efficiency and tooling longevity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop new die cast tooling, including cavity and core designs, cooling systems, slides, lifters, and venting.
- Manage tooling procurement from RFQ to final buyoff, working with external tool shops and internal stakeholders.
- Provide technical support for tool trials, mold sampling, and process validation (PPAP).
- Evaluate tool performance and root cause tooling-related quality or dimensional issues.
- Lead tooling changes, repairs, and engineering improvements to extend tool life and optimize performance.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing to ensure tool and part compatibility.
- Maintain accurate tooling documentation (2D/3D CAD, BOMs, revisions, and maintenance logs).
- Participate in APQP activities and support launch readiness reviews for new programs.
- Oversee preventive maintenance schedules and tooling standards compliance.
- Support capital planning and cost estimation for tooling budgets and improvement projects.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.
- 3–7 years of experience in tooling design and engineering, with at least 2+ years in die casting for automotive components.
- Proficient in CAD software (SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar).
- Knowledge of GD&T, mold flow analysis, and die thermal control systems.
- Familiarity with APQP, PPAP, and IATF 16949 quality systems.
- Strong project management and supplier coordination skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and tolerance stacks.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience with magnesium or aluminum die casting in a production automotive environment.
- Experience in runner and venting design for HPDC dies
- Exposure to casting simulation software (e.g., MAGMASOFT, Flow-3D).
- Knowledge of tool steel selection, heat treatment, and wear-resistant coatings.
