Overview
The Puppet Hair Fabrication Artist plays an essential role in bringing puppets to life by crafting and maintaining detailed hair and fur elements that enhance the film’s visual style. Responsibilities include creating complex hairstyles and facial hair for puppets, ensuring durability and flexibility for filming, and solving technical challenges for intricate hair builds. The Puppet Hair Fabrication Artist works collaboratively across departments to meet production goals and maintains high standards in hair and fiber fabrication.
Key Responsibilities
- Hair Design & Fabrication: Design and develop hair patterns for puppets using advanced techniques in hair laying, fiber blending, and sculpting, ensuring consistency with the production’s visual style
- Construction Techniques: Utilize a range of techniques, including wig-building, fiber blending, and root punching, to create dynamic and realistic puppet hair
- Problem Solving: Address technical challenges in hair durability, movement, and flexibility, ensuring the elements are film-ready
- Detail-Oriented Application: Precisely apply hairstyles, beards, and other hair elements to meet aesthetic and practical requirements for filming
- Documentation: Maintain clear and precise instructions for hair patterns, colors, and fabrication processes to enable accurate reproduction and repairs
- Collaboration: Work closely with Hair Lead to ensure hair movement and flexibility align with performance requirements
- Maintenance & Repairs: Manage hair touch-ups and repairs, ensuring hair elements are production-ready
- Inventory Management: Assist in tracking and organizing materials and supplies, proactively communicating any inventory needs
- Flexibility: Availability for extended hours as needed to meet production demands
Qualifications
- Experience: 5+ years in hair fabrication or fiber art for film and/or television
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in hair and fiber techniques, including hair laying, wig-building, and fiber sculpting, experience with model and prop-making is a plus
- Collaboration: Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively with other departments
- Problem Solving: Ability to address and resolve complex hair fabrication challenges
- Documentation: Ability to maintain detailed documentation for processes and materials
- Time Management: Ability to meet production deadlines and manage multiple tasks efficiently
