This is your chance to help lead a production that’s equal parts innovative and unforgettable.
Job Summary:
Swaybox Studios is seeking an experienced and hands-on Character Compositing Supervisor to lead the compositing process of our innovative Digi-Pup (Digital Puppetry) characters and CG elements. In this key leadership role, you will oversee the integration, merging, and finalizing of multiple layered puppet performances—crafted using our proprietary compositing pipeline—into fully realized characters ready for screen.
This position requires a deep understanding of compositing for high-end VFX, strong leadership and mentoring abilities, and technical proficiency in tools like Nuke and KeenTools. You will work closely with artists and Technical Directors to refine and develop tools that support a smooth, scalable, and artist-friendly workflow, while also managing team morale, quality control, and creative vision.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the compositing of Digi-Pup performances; ensuring layers are cleanly merged into a single, cohesive character with seamless motion and visual integrity.
- Integrate CG character elements, when needed.
- Provide hands-on support by running shot work, as needed, and helping troubleshoot artist files and pipeline issues.
- Guide the Character Comp team, offering regular feedback, mentorship, and support to foster a productive and collaborative working environment.
- Collaborate with the VFX Supervisor, MoMo Art Supervisor, CG Generalist Supervisor, and TDs to identify technical needs and recommend new tools or workflow improvements.
- Maintain high artistic standards while ensuring efficient and timely delivery of shots; balancing quality with schedule requirements.
- Participate in reviews and team syncs, clearly communicating creative and technical goals to both artists and stakeholders.
- Maintain up-to-date documentation for internal tools and compositing processes, helping ensure consistency across the team.
Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience compositing in high-end VFX film or episodic production, with a strong portfolio showcasing character- or performance-based compositing.
- Proven leadership or supervisory experience in a compositing team environment, including mentoring, feedback, and artist support.
- Expert knowledge of Nuke and advanced compositing techniques, particularly with layered performance integration and clean-up workflows.
- Proficiency with KeenTools and facial/character-based node workflows.
- Strong understanding of animation principles, performance nuances, and the subtleties of visual storytelling.
- Ability to troubleshoot, solve technical issues quickly, and adapt to unique or non-traditional workflows, including those based on digital puppetry.
- Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills in a collaborative, fast-paced production setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of vector-based compositing tools and techniques.
- Experience in Python scripting for Nuke, pipeline tool support, or batch automation is a plus.
- Familiarity performance-tracking pipelines, rotomation, or hybrid character workflows.
- Previous experience in developing or influencing pipeline tools in collaboration with Technical Directors.
