Job Description

We’re looking for an experienced SEO and CRO professional to spearhead our SEO and website UX for a developer audience. This is a key role in driving Tailscale’s top-of-funnel growth, customer acquisition, and organic content strategy. You’ll collaborate with content marketers, website development and design, product marketing, and other cross-functional team members to create a best-in-class website experience and up-level our overall technical and on-page SEO. We need someone who is adept at building out detailed processes for collaborators and setting a high standard for SEO best practices regarding on-page optimization. This person ideally should also have expertise and comfort with top-of-funnel CRO experimentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • SEO Strategy Development: Create and implement on-page SEO strategies that align with content goals, including keyword research, content optimization, and competitive analysis. Eager and curious to think out of the box for developing innovative ways to be forward thinking in our content development strategies.
  • CRO Strategy Development: Create and implement growth experimentation program for customer acquisition and signup conversion CRO, especially for paying accounts and organizations. This should include some aptitude and experience with User Research and developing a deeper understanding of our ICP.
  • Leadership, Training, and Mentorship: Provide training sessions and ongoing support to technical writers, editors, PMM, DevRel, etc. to enhance their understanding and application of SEO and CRO best practices. This should include developing and documenting processes, guidelines, and best practices for partner teams to follow, ensuring consistency and scalability. This role is the glue between product, design, content, PMM, demand generation and more, and will be responsible for keeping everyone informed on what's happening with the website and why.
  • Content Audits and Optimization: Conduct regular content audits to identify opportunities for improving existing content’s SEO performance, including updating meta tags, headings, and internal linking structures. This should include providing continuous recommendations for experiments, target keywords, and strategic insights for new and existing content.
  • Collaboration and Coordination: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including content team, product marketing, UX, web engineering and design, to ensure recommendations are implemented effectively.
  • Performance Tracking and Reporting: Monitor and report on web section and content performance using tools like Looker, Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and Semrush. In this role you will be an owner of our web analytics implementation, as well as all the baggage that entails: Marketing scripts, GDPR compliance, etc.
  • Innovation and Trend Monitoring: Stay updated on the latest CRO and SEO trends, algorithm updates, and best practices, and proactively implement new strategies to maintain a competitive edge.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in CRO/growth, SEO, Copy Editing, content strategy, or a similar role, focusing on optimizing website experience and content for search engines
  • Proven track record of working with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to identify gaps and opportunities for the development of new website experiences and content which resonates with a developer audience
  • Ability to be forward thinking as we are building new processes so our team can grow and scale to support new products and initiatives
  • Technical aptitude will be necessary to learn and understand our products and the developer-centric content we produce
  • Ability to track and analyze the right metrics and leverage a data-driven approach when developing a strategy
  • Curiosity and an open mind - This person will have strong instincts and will know when a deeper-dive is needed to better understand why a web section and/or content is (or isn’t) performing
  • Experience running experiments to prove or disprove working theories. We are always testing. We believe we learn just as much from getting it wrong and aren’t afraid to admit it and pivot strategies, if necessary. This should include experience with A/B testing and user funnel optimization techniques
  • Self-starter who can manage multiple projects independently from start to finish
  • Hunger to meaningfully grow Tailscale’s customer conversions, especially among technical audiences
  • An affinity for learning complex, highly technical products and strong technical aptitude generally

It’s nice if you have:

  • Experience working at B2B SaaS or cloud companies
  • Experience working in or with growth teams
  • Experience managing a website or SEO program independently at a fast-growing startup
  • Extensive user research experience with an emphasis on ICP understanding

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
