Job Description
We are looking for a Technical Writer to join our Documentation team to help us create and deliver world-class product documentation, tutorials, conceptual guides, and examples that help networking and security professionals and software engineers understand when, why, and how to use Tailscale's products and features.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of producing high-quality product documentation for a highly-technical audience and have some experience with networking and security concepts.
Key Responsibilities
- You'll use your experience as a writer and technical practitioner to produce, test, and maintain quality, consistent, contextualized, and technically accurate documentation for our products that help customers and prospects understand how Tailscale solves their existing problems.
- You’ll develop how-to guides, conceptual topics, reference guides, tutorials, and other technical content, and you’ll understand when each content type is appropriate.
- You’ll write content for a diverse audience including software developers, infrastructure engineers, security practitioners, and decision-makers, adjusting your content and tone to fit your audience.
- You’ll update and refine existing content to reflect changes to the product and feedback from training sessions, surveys, and collected metrics.
- You’ll build strong relationships as you collaborate with subject-matter experts, product managers, and your team to plan, organize, write, edit, review, and evolve our documentation.
- You'll collaborate with other content creators to ensure that content you develop aligns with the organization's goals and strategies, and you'll engage our community of users through active participation in our community spaces.
- You’ll support engineers and other subject-matter experts who contribute to our documentation, helping them improve their writing through guidance and content reviews.
- You’ll contribute to information architecture and platform improvements to help customers find answers faster.
- You'll become an expert in Tailscale's features and products, and understand our customer's needs and pain points so you can serve them better.
What We Are Looking For
- You have at least 3 years of professional technical writing and editing experience creating high-quality, code-heavy product documentation and how-to guides for a diverse technical audience. You can explain how something works, as well as when and why a customer would need it.
- You are technically proficient. You have hands-on experience with networking or security products, and are comfortable in technical conversations with other practitioners, including engineers and product managers.
- You are comfortable with Git, GitHub, Markdown, and the command-line interface, and have experience using a docs-as-code publishing workflow.
- You’re a strong editor who can guide others through the outlining and writing process, and you can catch inconsistencies in tone, flow, and structure.
- You can drive multiple projects from the beginning to completion, and you can collaborate with other writers, editors, product managers, and subject-matter experts to deliver high-quality work at scale.
- You’re just as comfortable integrating the work of others as you are creating your own content, and you know how to use multiple tools and sources to deliver quality content.
- You have excellent written and verbal English communication skills, and you are as comfortable receiving and applying feedback as you are providing it to peers.
- You're excited to learn new technologies and grow your skills with a team of professional writers who care about documentation and customer experience.
- You're interested in how LLMs and automation can help writers produce and maintain content as products evolve.
Nice to Have
- You have software development experience.
- You've contributed to open-source software projects or communities.
