Data Engineer
Company: tastytrade
Role: Data Engineer
Location: Chicago, IL – Hybrid 4 days/week in office
We're looking for a Data Engineer to join our Analytics team. You'll own data pipeline architecture. You'll upskill those around you. You'll have a real influence on how we build our data platform. We need an experienced data engineer who can own their projects while being a member of a full stack data team—data scientists, data engineers, and analysts who take full ownership of our data pipelines and feature generation. This is a full-scope role. You design systems. You make tech decisions. You ship. You iterate. If you have a good idea and can execute it, we'd love to learn.
What You'll Do
- Lead ad-hoc analysis using both internal and external data sources for a variety of different teams to understand how our customers interact with our products
- Design and build scalable data pipelines using dbt, Python, Airflow, and Snowflake to support various business processes (such as our executive reporting dashboards)
- Own data quality and observability—you're the one who cares about data being right
- Make architectural decisions: schema design, tool selection, trade-offs
- Write ELT code using modern data engineering practices (Git, automated testing and deployments)
- Debug production data issues when they break (and they will)
- Collaborate with multiple teams including upstream data producers (Software Engineering/DevOps teams) and downstream data consumers (Marketing/Product/Leadership teams)
- Upskill those around you through code review, design collaboration, and knowledge sharing
- Contribute to data visualization and reporting efforts in Tableau
- Optimize performance, improve processes, level up team practices
- Process, clean, and validate data from a variety of external sources and internal data pipelines
What You Are:
- 2-5 years of professional data engineering experience
- Expert SQL skills—you think in queries, optimize ruthlessly
- Real dbt experience—not just exposure, actual production work
- Solid Python—production code, not scripts
- Hands-on Airflow (or Prefect/Dagster)
- Cloud data warehouse experience (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift)
- Understanding of data product lifecycle, standards and practices
- Knowledge of quality data functions like cleansing, standardization, parsing, and validation
- Proven ability to design systems and lead projects
- You communicate clearly with non-engineers and engineers alike
- Proficiency with version control systems (Git/GitHub) and command line interfaces
Nice to Have
- Kubernetes or infrastructure-as-code experience
- CI/CD and DevOps practices
- Data quality frameworks (Elementary, Great Expectations, Monte Carlo)
- Financial services background
- Advanced Airflow patterns, custom operators
- Experience with agile development practices and project lifecycle
You'll Own
- Pipeline architecture and performance
- Data quality infrastructure and observability
- Strategic initiatives to improve our data platform
Our Stack
- Snowflake
- Dbt
- Airflow
- Tableau
- Python
- AWS (S3, ECR, EKS)
- Github
- ArgoCD
- Elementary
- Grafana
