Technical Designer
WHO WE ARE:
Teague is an independent design consultancy that combines technology expertise with a deep understanding of human behavior to design what’s next for companies in automotive, commercial aviation, smart cities and infrastructure, advanced mobility, technology, space, and defense. On any given day, you might be prototyping a new space station, designing cutting-edge technology, or traveling around the world conducting research. We are approaching our one-hundred-year anniversary and are proudly employee-owned. Our culture fosters collaboration, accountability, and stability—because when we succeed, we all win. Come be a part of something bigger than just a job—build your career with an employee-owned company that invests in you!
ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Technical Designer transforms creative concepts into build-ready realities by translating design intent into precise mockup strategies, documentation, and models. This role blends technical rigor with design sensitivity - ensuring ideas can be tested, evaluated, and refined through high-quality physical mockups and prototypes.
Drawing on expertise in materials, fabrication methods, and 3D CAD, the Technical Designer interprets industrial, mechanical, and experiential design concepts with accuracy and foresight. Working closely with Industrial Designers, Mechanical Designers, and Technical Build specialists, you help bridge concept and execution - anticipating constraints, enabling iteration, and supporting successful fabrication. Through thoughtful design-for-build decisions, you play a critical role in turning bold ideas into tangible, real-world experiences.
Travel Expectations
Occasional domestic and international travel to support client and/or vendor projects or meetings.
WHO YOU ARE:
You’re a design-minded problem solver with a builder’s sensibility—equally comfortable thinking through systems as you are getting into the details. You thrive in fast-moving, collaborative environments where design intent must be translated into clear, buildable solutions. Precision matters to you, but so does purpose. You understand that mockups aren’t just things to make, they’re tools for learning.
You’re fluent in 3D CAD (we use SolidWorks) and technical documentation, with a strong understanding of materials, fabrication methods, and assembly constraints. You can take an industrial or mechanical design concept and anticipate what it will take to build it—spotting risks, resolving ambiguity, and making smart tradeoffs along the way. Collaboration energizes you. You enjoy working closely with designers, engineers, and build teams to refine ideas, align intent, and support mockups that are thoughtful, accurate, and effective.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
OWNING: Ownership | Grit | Professionalism
- Translate design concepts into clear, buildable mockup strategies—balancing intent, feasibility, schedule, and budget.
- Take responsibility for mockup documentation quality, accuracy, and completeness, including drawings, assemblies, and data management.
- Uphold Teague’s standards for craft, safety, and technical excellence in shop, vendor, and installation environments.
- Manage work within defined scope, timing, and budget while proactively identifying risks, constraints, and tradeoffs.
- Act as a dependable partner to design and build teams, following through on commitments and supporting project momentum.
THINKING: Strategy | Innovation | Rigor
- Develop design-for-build strategies that anticipate fabrication methods, materials, tolerances, assembly, and installation constraints.
- Apply aircraft knowledge and mockup best practices to inform scoping, planning, and execution decisions.
- Evaluate manufacturing processes and materials to identify the best solutions for each project.
- Think holistically about how mockups support iteration, validation, and learning—not just appearance.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to solve complex technical challenges with creativity, discipline, and pragmatism.
DOING: Expertise | Influence | Stewardship
- Create mockup documentation packages, including detailed part drawings, assemblies, and fabrication instructions.
- Produce and maintain 3D CAD models (primarily SolidWorks) to support mockup development and coordination.
- Communicate design intent through sketches, CAD, and presentations for internal teams and fabrication partners.
- Coordinate with Industrial Design, Mechanical Design, and Technical Build teams to support in-house and vendor fabrication.
- Participate hands-on in shop activities as needed, supporting fabrication, assembly, and installation.
- Maintain accurate project data within Teague’s data management systems.
WHAT YOU BRING:
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 2–4 years of experience in a corporate or consulting design environment; aerospace or aircraft-related experience is a strong plus.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks), mockup documentation, and data management systems.
- Comfort working in a shop environment using hand tools, woodworking equipment, and other fabrication techniques and materials.
- Working knowledge of construction mathematics and measurement systems, including hands-on experience with precision tools (e.g., calipers).
- Familiarity with aircraft and/or exhibit mockup construction methods is a plus.
- Strong communication skills and comfort collaborating across disciplines.
Due to project requirements, this role requires someone who is a US Persons.
This role is non-exempt and pays hourly, including overtime. The salary range for this job in most US geographic locations is $33-$40/hour.
