Position:  Linux Systems Engineer II

Position Details      

Salary Range: $70,000-$90,000 a year. This is a full-time exempt position.    

The development work will be performed at the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) in Rome, NY.

Responsibilities and Duties    

The candidate’s responsibilities and duties will include:     

  • Analyzing existing systems to enhance security, reliability, and availability 
  • Utilizing Linux administrative systems knowledge to support team members in testing and troubleshooting 
  • Collaborating with a team to test and evaluate systems using a Whitebox adversarial approach 
  • Assessing hardware and software systems based on NIST 800-53 RMF security controls 
  • Conduct testing and analysis to identify vulnerabilities, threat vectors, and potential exploits 
  • Developing and engineering attack methodologies. 
  • Applying specific functional and working or industry knowledge. 
  • Developing or contributing to solutions for problems of moderate scope and complexity 

    

Education and Certifications:    

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and 3 years of professional experience is preferred. A degree in computer programming, software engineering, or a closely related technical field is required for many of our projects. We will consider candidates with associate degrees or certificates in the areas listed above in combination with experience.     

    

Required Qualifications:    

  • Proven ability to design, deploy, and manage Linux server solutions in complex enterprise environments, with a minimum of 3 years of experience 
  • Demonstrated skill in integrating servers with LDAP, SSO, and VMware technologies to support enterprise needs 
  • Possesses deep understanding of Linux server patch management practices and repositories 
  • Experience implementing and maintaining security standards such as STIGs for Red Hat or other Linux distributions 
  • Strong background in scripting languages like PowerShell, VBScript, or Python to automate tasks and streamline processes 
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, or OpenShift for deploying and managing applications 
  • Ability to develop, execute, and analyze test plans and procedures. Proven experience in creating and maintaining technical documentation 
  • Maintain a positive and proactive attitude in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment 
  • Security Clearance: Possess a Secret clearance 
  • Must hold a CompTIA Security+ certification or IAT level II equivalent certification 

   

Preferred Qualifications:   

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology or computer science. 
  • Red Hat Certified Systems Administrator (RHSA) certification 
  • Demonstrated experience in automating server deployment, common tasks, and installation procedures to improve efficiency 
  • Strong understanding of VMware virtual server environments and the ability to optimize systems for performance and flexibility 
  • Proven ability to effectively coordinate with change control, environment management, network, and security teams 

   

Clearance:    

Applicants must possess and maintain a secret clearance, at minimum. 

    

Travel:    

This position is not expected to require travel.
