Position Details      

Salary Range: $80,000-$115,000 annually. This is a full-time exempt position.    

This is an on-site, full-time position in Rome, NY, with work performed at AFRL and the Innovare Advancement Center at the Rome Griffiss Institute campus.  Candidates must be located, or re-locate, within a commutable distance to Rome, NY.

Responsibilities and Duties    

This role will perform research and development of superconducting quantum circuits to advance state-of-the art quantum networking and computing with a focus on quantum transduction and heterogeneous networking. The ideal candidate will: 

  • Conduct independent and team-based research to design and model superconducting circuit components including transmons and SQUIDs 
  • Conduct independent and team-based research to design and model piezoelectric, optomechanical and other microwave-to-optical quantum transducers 
  • Create models and run simulations to determine and optimize superconducting device performance with Multiphysics tools or finite-difference time-domain algorithms 
  • Setup and conduct experiments to characterize superconducting quantum devices using advanced laboratory equipment including dilution refrigerators, vector network analyzers, and RF signal generators. 
  • Collaborate in writing technical proposals for future contracts 
  • Prepare technical reports to present their research findings 

 

Education and Certifications:    

This project requires graduation from an accredited college or university with a PhD in physics, applied physics, or closely related technical field.  

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • 4+ years of experience working with superconducting quantum devices as part of Ph.D. program or equivalent industry experience 
  • Expertise in using simulation and modeling software for modeling superconducting circuits (e.g. Comsol Multiphysics RF module or related software) 
  • Experience in designing and testing superconducting quantum systems 
  • Experience with cryogenics, low-temperature physics, and RF control systems 
  • Experience in scientific writing, specifically for technical reports and contract proposals with broad audiences of technical engineers and scientists   
  • Highly driven and ability to work independently 
  • Great at communicating complex ideas 
  • Highly organized 
  • Keeps detailed notes (i.e. laboratory notes) 
  • Works well as part of a team, especially in an interdisciplinary setting consisting of professionals from different physics and engineering fields 
  • Can clearly convey ideas and arguments while writing scientific documents 

 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge of quantum frequency transduction methods (specifically RF to optical frequencies) 
  • Expertise in operating superconducting laboratory equipment including dilution refrigerators and microwave equipment. 
  • Use of programming languages such as python for data analysis and hardware control 
  • Experience with circuit design theoryand circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) 
  • Background in quantum physics, quantum information, and/or quantum computing with a preference for/experience with superconducting circuits and circuit QED 

 

Clearance:    

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and must meet andmaintaineligibility requirements for, at minimum, Secret access to classified information.     

 

Travel:    

This position is expected to require 10% travel.
