WOI Local 5 in Des Moines, Iowa, is looking for a talented and motivated Multi-Skilled Journalist to join our team in a city where politics, weather, and great stories are always part of the landscape. Des Moines is a growing community with plenty of opportunities for a journalist eager to tell stories that matter.

We’re seeking a journalist with a strong sense of curiosity and creativity—someone who digs deeper to uncover the details that add value to a story. If you’re the type of reporter who looks beyond the press release and strives to provide new angles and context, we want to hear from you.

Responsibilities

  • In this role, you’ll handle a mix of quick-turn MSJ stories and longer, more in-depth pieces. This includes shooting, writing, and editing content. You’ll also have the chance to collaborate with our skilled photographers to create compelling visual content.
  • The ideal candidate is a team player with solid newsroom skills. You should be comfortable with interviewing, writing, and ad-libbing in live situations. We value a positive attitude and a commitment to the success of the team.
  • At Local 5, we see our digital platforms as equally important as our broadcast product. We’re looking for someone who can craft engaging web stories and stay active on social media.

If this sounds like a good fit for you, we encourage you to apply and be part of the Local 5 team.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts in journalism, communications, or other related degree is preferred.
  • Possess a clear understanding of the tenets of professional, ethical journalism.
  • Strong awareness of current events, especially at the local and regional level
  • Must have organizational skills and be able to work under pressure with strict deadlines.
  • Knowledge of ENPS and Edius is a plus
