This strategic dual role leads news operations and content strategy across TEGNA's Florida stations in Tampa (WTSP) and Jacksonville (WTLV/WJXX). The position combines statewide content leadership with direct oversight of Tampa's newsroom, ensuring a unified vision and consistent delivery of excellence in journalism across television, streaming, and digital platforms. 

As the Director of Content, you will be a key collaborator with station leadership, working together to develop and execute statewide strategies that drive audience engagement and business growth. 

You will also play a vital role in developing talent, ensuring your teams have the support, training and opportunities to grow and succeed. The ideal candidate has excellent news judgment and strong management skills to own the big story each day, turn performance metrics into action, and explore new revenue opportunities through creative content initiatives.

Responsibilities: 

  • Content Strategy Development: Create and execute a robust content strategy to drive audience growth and achieve revenue targets across various platforms and markets. 
  • Team Leadership: Train, develop, lead, and manage the Florida statewide content team, including Jacksonville and the Statewide Digital Director. 
  • Content Creation Oversight: Supervise content production for linear, streaming, and digital formats, ensuring accuracy, engagement, relevance, and alignment with audience interests. 
  • Performance Analysis: Monitor and analyze content performance, making data-driven adjustments to enhance effectiveness. 
  • Innovative Storytelling: Champion creative storytelling and enterprising reporting, integrating focus into all Florida content strategies that can deliver impactful journalism and develop a digital-first road map in line with the strategic vision. 
  • Weather and Investigative Strategy: Spearhead and lead Florida statewide initiatives, including severe weather, hurricane planning, and investigative reporting. 
  • Breaking News: Ability to manage live, breaking news situations with a professional, calm but urgent composure while quickly and accurately prioritizing stories. Must demonstrate calm and decisive leadership in breaking news coverage. 
  • Technology Integration: Implement new technologies to streamline workflows, while optimizing and improving Florida content creation efficiency. 
  • Revenue Optimization: Leverage and maximize data insights to enhance revenue opportunities and increase market share through strategic insights. 
  • Stakeholder Reporting: Ensure accurate and timely reporting for Tampa Newsroom and Florida leadership and corporate stakeholders. 
  • Industry Representation: Represent the company at content events, demonstrating thought leadership and expertise within the industry. 
  • Culture Building: Cultivate and foster a culture of innovation, adaptability, and high performance within the Tampa and Florida content teams. 

  • Travel Requirements: Extensive travel between TEGNA markets is required to support statewide content initiatives. 

Requirements: 

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. 
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in media content, with at least 4-5 years in a leadership role with a proven track record of mentoring, training, and leadership development. 
  • Multi-Market Management: Experience managing teams across multiple locations is highly desirable. 
  • Journalistic Integrity: Strong journalistic judgment with a focus on accuracy, fairness, and community engagement. 
  • Strategic Leadership: Proven ability to develop and execute successful content strategies. 
  • Travel Flexibility: The role's daily responsibilities will be based in Tampa. Frequent travel between Jacksonville and Tampa, including occasional overnight stays, is required. 
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate high-performing multi-market teams. 
  • Communication: Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills. 
  • Problem-Solving: Strong strategic, agile thinking and adaptability in high-pressure situations. 

  • Digital Proficiency: Key expert, in-depth understanding of digital, streaming production, and platforms, with active social media skills.
