Head of Engineering
About Tekmerion:
Tekmerion is a systematic macro hedge fund trading liquid assets across major global economies, combining the fundamental insights of a macro trader with the analytical rigor of a systematic investment manager. We operate in medium- to long-term horizons, using quantitatively generated signals derived from macroeconomic and market data. Our investment process is systematic, research-driven, and engineered for robustness, scalability, and reproducibility.
Role Description:
We're looking to hire an engineering manager to own and evolve the core systems that power Tekmerion's research and daily investment infrastructure. This role sits at the intersection of technology and management with significant responsibility for technical leadership, team mentoring, and architectural decision-making. You will guide a small engineering team, set technical direction, and work closely with macro analysts and data analysts to bring data pipelines and models to production, while also evolving our Python codebase of highly scalable services and AWS infrastructure.
We're looking for a strong engineer who can also lead: someone who sets the standard for code quality and system design, mentors other engineers, makes sound architecture and database decisions, administers CI/CD pipelines, and ensures our systems scale reliably as the business grows. This role is directly responsible for the health of our investment process and the effectiveness of our engineering team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Technical leadership & architecture: Define and drive the technical roadmap for Tekmerion's software infrastructure. Make high-impact architecture and database design decisions, including schema design, query optimization, data modeling, and technology selection.
- Team management: Lead, mentor, and grow a small engineering team. Conduct code reviews, set engineering standards, and run sprint planning or workflow processes.
- Hands-on development: Contribute to Tekmerion's Python codebase supporting research, data processing, signal generation, and trade generation.
- Data pipeline design: Architect, implement, and optimize data pipelines for economic and market datasets, ensuring correctness, performance, and reliability at scale.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Partner with macro and data analysts to translate research ideas into robust, production-ready systems. Ensure engineering priorities are aligned with research and investment goals.
- Cloud infrastructure: Oversee the design and management of cloud infrastructure on AWS, including compute, storage, orchestration, and monitoring. Make key decisions on service architecture, deployment strategy, and cost management.
- Extraordinary diligence and attention to detail
- System reliability: Drive improvements in system reliability, performance, and observability across research and production environments. Establish incident response practices and on-call norms.
Desired Qualifications:
- Proven experience leading engineering teams, including mentoring engineers, conducting code reviews, managing technical projects, and making hiring decisions
- Experience with end-to-end systematic investment processes, from data ingestion and nowcasting through signal generation, portfolio construction/optimization algorithms, and downstream trading pipelines
- Strong architecture and database design skills, including experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, RDS), schema design, query optimization, and data modeling for analytical workloads
- Comfort working with statistics or time-series data
- Strong understanding of user experience, API design, and user interface design, especially when targeting fewer technical users
- Experience building research platforms or backtesting systems
- Knowledge of distributed systems, workflow orchestration, or data engineering tools
What we Offer:
- Opportunity to lead a nascent engineering organization, shaping its practices and technology
- Collaborative, research-driven culture with close interaction between engineers and analysts
The base salary for this role is anticipated to be $325,000–$400,000, excluding potential bonuses, additional compensation, and benefits. Actual compensation will depend on various factors including skills, experience, and qualifications.
