Staff Software Engineer, Release Engineering & Testing Platform
Summary
We have an opening for a Staff Software Engineer to join our Developer Productivity Team, with a dedicated focus on building and scaling our release engineering and testing platform. This team’s mission is to make Temporal developers faster, more reliable, and more effective. As a Staff Engineer, you will provide technical leadership, design vision, and hands-on implementation for the systems that enable reliable, automated, and high-confidence releases of Temporal’s core platforms and services. You’ll also drive the strategy and evolution of our internal testing frameworks to ensure quality at scale.

What You’ll Do
Build & Lead
- Define and own the technical strategy for Temporal’s release engineering and testing platforms, ensuring they scale with the company.
- Design, implement, and evolve automation for CI/CD, release validation, regression testing, and deployment.
- Build frameworks and tooling that enable developers to test, validate, and ship with confidence.
- Lead technical planning and establish best practices for release reliability and testing at scale.
- Document design choices, workflows, and operational practices to ensure sustainable adoption across teams.
Own & Guide
- Set a high bar for technical excellence in release engineering and testing platforms.
- Design and build multi-component, distributed systems that operate at scale.
- Drive root-cause analysis and resolution of issues across the release stack.
- Anticipate performance and reliability tradeoffs of design options and guide the team in making pragmatic choices.
- Mentor engineers across the organization in release automation and testing best practices.
- Able to participate in the team’s on-call rotation.
Learn & Influence
- Stay ahead of emerging practices in release engineering, testing, and developer productivity.
- Develop deep expertise in Temporal’s architecture to design testing frameworks that reflect real-world complexity.
- Investigate and understand ways to best leverage Temporal’s own software to power our mission.
- Understand developer needs across the company and influence tooling strategies to maximize velocity and confidence.
Collaborate
- Partner with engineering leadership to align release engineering strategy with company goals.
- Work across teams to design scalable release processes and testing strategies.
- Advocate for system reliability and developer experience in cross-functional discussions.
What You’ll Bring
- Proven experience providing technical leadership in developer tooling, release engineering, or large-scale testing frameworks.
- Strong opinions on release engineering and testing practices that are equally balanced by a pragmatic drive for impact.
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement CI/CD systems, release automation, and testing infrastructure at scale.
- Proficiency in Go (required) with experience building and maintaining production systems.
- Track record of mentoring and guiding engineers to elevate technical standards.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, self-directed environment with strong communication and collaboration skills.
Compensation
- The estimated pay range for this role is $170,000 - $250,000, depending on qualifications and location.
- This role is eligible to participate in Temporal's equity plan.
