Summary
Terran Orbital is seeking an experienced Staff Weld Engineer to join our growing team. Reporting to the IPT Lead – Electrical Power Systems, the Staff Weld Engineer will work within a multi-disciplinary team to oversee and improve welding processes. The Staff Weld Engineer will play a crucial role in ensuring the integrity and quality of welded structures and components.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead the maintenance and continuous improvement of weld system controls to ensure quality for flight hardware including creating and implementing process plans and operating procedures.
- Speak to and tailor welding standards such as NASA-PRC-009, for application to Terran Orbital EPS products.
- Develop and implement a robust framework for validating, qualifying and deploying changes to production weld processes.
- Develop and qualify weld schedules on resistance weld machine for battery production.
- Work with Quality team to establish criteria for success across battery production line.
- Work with cross-functional teams to drive key changes in the manufacturing process to improve reliability, poke-yoke and efficiency on production floor.
- Clearly articulate and defend engineering decisions with a fact-based data driven mindset.
Qualifications and Skills
- BS Mechanical, Industrial, or Welding Engineering
- 8+ years of experience with welding materials including parallel gap resistance spot welding.
- Strong understanding of welding techniques and parameter development, including metallurgy considerations, and familiarity with other welding solutions and assessing their pros/cons.
- Familiarity with robotic welding applications.
- Experience developing and qualifying a resistance weld profile on battery cells.
- Familiarity with and experience with common root cause analysis (RCA) methods to identify and resolve failures or concerns observed in the manufacturing process.
- Familiarity with CAD systems.
- Background in materials science with metallurgical behavior in weld applications is preferred but not required.
- Willingness to push outside your comfort zone in the pursuit of learning and growing the future of power storage in space
- U.S. Person or lawful permanent resident to comply with U.S. government space technology export regulations.
Your actual level and base salary will be determined case-by-case and may vary based on the job-related qualification, knowledge, skills, education, and experience. $150,000 - $180,000 USD
