News Editor - Montgomery County
Join a Pulitzer Award Winning Newsroom!
Be at the forefront of building something new.
Founded to bring high-quality local journalism to communities across Maryland, The Banner is creating a vibrant, strong, trustworthy, and sustainable news organization. A multi-platform news operation covering a broad range of topics from local government to education, business and culture. We tell stories that reflect the community, connecting neighbors, holding government institutions accountable, and making sense of the world. We’re now expanding our vision to Montgomery County, Maryland — and we’re looking for an experienced News Editor to help lead the charge.
This is a rare opportunity to shape the editorial voice of a new publication serving the most populous county in Maryland. You’ll lead a talented team of reporters and collaborate closely with the Executive Editor to produce compelling essential journalism with energy, depth, and audience appeal.
We’re seeking a strong editorial leader with exceptional news judgment, a deep sense of community, and the ambition to innovate. This is an ideal role for a seasoned editor looking to make a meaningful impact outside the traditional structures of legacy media.
What You’ll Do:
- Direct the day-to-day editorial operations for the Montgomery County newsroom — from breaking news to features to enterprise
- Mentor and manage a diverse team of reporters, helping to identify, shape and produce compelling content for a Montgomery audience
- Edit the team’s stories to the high standards of The Banner – and work closely with the audience, social and visual teams to ensure the content finds a large and engaged audience
- Foster a newsroom culture of excellence, inclusion, and innovation
- Identify opportunities for high-impact storytelling on the ground — through accountability reporting, local features, service journalism, and more
What You Bring:
- At least 10+ years of newsroom experience, including editorial leadership in a fast-paced, digital-forward environment
- Strong instincts for what makes a great story — and how to elevate it across platforms
- Proven ability to manage and inspire journalists, balancing support with high standards
- A collaborative mindset and comfort working across departments, from audience to visuals to product
- Familiarity with local journalism and its challenges — and a belief in its power to build stronger communities
- Knowledge of Montgomery County or the greater D.C. region is a plus, but not required
Why This Role Matters:
This is more than a typical newsroom job — it’s a chance to build on The Banner’s new approach to local journalism that’s deeply embedded in the community, independent from corporate influence and backed by a nonprofit mission. The Montgomery County publication will be high-visibility, high-impact, and central to The Banner’s vision for growth across the state.
