Job Description

The Daily Beast is seeking a results-driven VP of Programmatic Yield to lead and grow our programmatic business, one of our most important and fastest-growing revenue streams.

The ideal candidate combines deep programmatic expertise with superb analytical skills and a love for data-driven decision-making. We need someone who is energized by ambitious revenue targets, acts as a proactive problem solver, and thrives in a hands-on role. This is a working VP position, you'll toggle seamlessly between communicating big-picture strategy to executives, collaborating across functions, and rolling up your sleeves to build models and optimize campaigns alongside your team of analysts.

This person will report to the EVP of Strategy & Business Operations and will manage a team of two analysts. You'll be joining a small but mighty team laser-focused on achieving aggressive revenue and performance goals while maintaining The Daily Beast's premium publisher standards.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Strategic Leadership & Revenue Growth

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive programmatic advertising strategy that aligns with the company's overall revenue objectives, driving measurable growth in programmatic yield and identifying new revenue opportunities across emerging formats and channels.
  • Own programmatic revenue forecasting and performance against targets, directly analyzing data and building models to inform strategic recommendations to the EVP and executive team on market trends, competitive positioning, and growth initiatives.
  • Design, implement, and continuously optimize the pricing strategy for open auction inventory, specifically within unified pricing rules, conducting hands-on analysis to maximize yield while maintaining advertiser demand and a premium user experience that protects The Daily Beast's brand integrity.
  • Balance aggressive revenue optimization with maintaining a best-in-class site experience, ensuring programmatic strategies enhance rather than detract from our editorial mission and reader engagement, thinking holistically about long-term audience retention alongside short-term yield gains.

Partner & Stakeholder Management

  • Cultivate and manage strategic programmatic partner relationships (SSPs, DSPs, exchanges), personally driving negotiations, troubleshooting technical issues, and keeping key initiatives on track for mutual success.
  • Identify and develop programmatic direct partnerships through direct analysis of performance data, collaborating closely with sales and marketing leadership to leverage new opportunities and expand revenue streams.
  • Work cross-functionally with Product, Editorial, and AdOps to ensure programmatic implementations align with our premium publisher positioning, advocating for ad experiences that command higher CPMs while respecting audience expectations.

Analytics & Performance Optimization (Hands-On)

  • Personally conduct deep-dive analyses using advanced Excel, SQL, and analytics platforms to track KPIs, identify optimization opportunities, and design/implement A/B tests and experimental strategies to enhance ad performance and increase overall yield.
  • Directly monitor ad inventory levels and user experience metrics, building reports and dashboards that track both revenue performance and site quality indicators (page load times, viewability, ad density) to develop data-driven strategies that optimize for sustainable, premium revenue growth.
  • Create executive-level reports and presentations, conducting the underlying analysis yourself while leveraging your team for support on data collection and validation.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead and mentor a lean team of two analysts, working alongside them on complex analyses while providing guidance, support, and development opportunities to achieve individual and team goals.
  • Model a hands-on, results-driven approach that balances strategic thinking with tactical execution—you'll be in the trenches building models, analyzing data, and solving problems daily alongside your team.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and continuous learning within the programmatic yield team, serving as both a strategic thought leader and an active contributor who can effectively toggle between big-picture strategy and detailed analytical work.

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years in digital advertising with at least 5 years focused on programmatic advertising and yield management within the digital publishing industry
  • 3-5+ years managing teams (we value quality mentorship over team size—experience leading small, high-impact teams is ideal)
  • Revenue-driven: Demonstrates a dedicated focus on generating revenue, directing the majority of their attention towards finding strategies to achieve the revenue targets.
  • An instinctual problem solver, constantly looking for new and better ways to grow the business
  • Expert in Excel with ability to create pivot tables, use v-lookup formulas, if/then statements, devise charts and graphs that convey actionable insights
  • Understanding of the programmatic landscape, inclusive of SSPs, DSPs
  • Understanding of various publisher metric models (RPM, ARPU, IPV, CPM, CPC, CPA)
  • Knowledge of GCP, SQL a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate the big picture while providing detailed hands-on direction for your team of analysts
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Being able to move fast while staying organized is a must
  • A deep interest in or passion for the business of media, a plus
  • A curious self-starter, never afraid to ask questions to deepen understanding
  • An enthusiastic collaborator that enjoys building relationships with internal partner teams
  • BA or BS degree

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
