Senior Accountant

THE POSITION
The Senior Accountant is a critical new position and will report to the Controller, and working closely with the Chief Financial Officer. This person will help to increase the capacity of both the operational and grantmaking functions at the organization by paying attention to detail and assisting with complex reporting requirements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Reporting and Analysis
- Preparation and input of budgeted revenue/expense to actual revenue/expense comparison, and analysis
- Preparation/review of departmental expense allocations
- Preparation of inter-company expense allocation
Auditing and Compliance
- Review general ledger on a monthly basis ensuring departmental expenses are allocated properly for month end close
- Reviewing payment entries in the accounting system, providing back up to recording payment entries
- Review compiled weekly invoices and related manager approvals in Concur and push to the accounting system
- Review/booking of subsidiary entity ledger
- Review and coordination of historical entities financial information with VP of Tax Compliance and Operations
- Reconcile employee payroll and benefits, creating journal entries using worksheets and analysis
- Coordinate and track contracts and events for financial compliance and recordkeeping requirements, communicating issues with other departments
Providing Support
- Assist in review of employee expense reports in Concur and ensure all expenses are recorded properly in the accounting system, reconciling travel costs when necessary
- Assist in annual financial audit and prepare schedules requested by the auditor
- Assist in review of schedules and workpapers for the completion of annual tax return
- Assist with special projects
- Provide back up support to other Finance Team Members, as needed
Communication and Confidentiality
- Communicate thoughtfully and respectfully to internal and external audiences, holding care and confidentiality, exercising judgement, and maintaining credibility and trust
- Initiate follow up with Freedom Together managers if there are any checks/billpays outstanding for more than 30 days
Qualifications, Competencies and Behaviors
- Bachelor of Science in Accounting or equivalent from an accredited university
- CPA or former CPA
- Four to six years progressively responsible experience in the accounting industry
- Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Strong analytical and accounting skills
- Intermediate to advanced experience with MS Programs, especially with Excel
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of major accounting software packages for both general ledger and statutory accounting. SAGE Intacct preferred.
- Must be able to effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline driven environment
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team and take on new tasks with high level of difficulty; expected to work with minimal upfront guidance and take ownership of work product
- Follows high ethical standards and confidentiality
- Persistent and thoughtful in all communication
- Experience at a foundation is preferred.
SALARY & BENEFITS
This is a full time, exempt position. Freedom Together deeply values fair and equitable wages that enables people to thrive. The salary range for this position is $120,000-$140,000. Freedom Together is based in Manhattan, NY and operates on a hybrid schedule. Staff work from the office 3 days weekly, with the flexibility to work remotely two days weekly.
